Cat!!! - Homewood,IL

My five month old KITTEN is constantly on the table and counters trying to get table scraps! He acts as though he is constantly starving but he has food in his dish. He will drag a closed baggie of bread off the counter and gnaw through the bag to get at the bread! We have to lock him up during meals too! Any suggestions about how to get him to stay off the counters and table?...

What can I do next?

My mother uses a spray bottle of water. Spritz them when they try to jump up. Works like a charm.

Dog!!!

Have you tried duct tape? :p

Keep pulling him down, he will get it eventually.

There is a better video somewhere but try this... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oz9ZqvrojFo

I've had cats (and kittens) all my life. Sounds like a normal cat to me.

Get a squirt bottle of water and squirt him when he gets on the counters. Works like a charm.

I have had cats.
They never went on counters or furniture.
If they did, I scolded them.
Shooed them.
Said "NO" to them.
They learned.

Spray bottle.

Also, be sure he's been wormed and is getting QUALITY food. That cheap stuff is made with fillers. Kitty needs protien.

No!! My cats do not get on the table, unless they do when I'm not home and they laugh and jump down when I'm walking in the door. When they were kittens, I yelled no at them really loud and push them to the floor. When they beg for food same thing. I guess they must have got the hint because we don't have that happening. Or for the dog either. My BIL has a dog that eats off your plate when you're sitting at the table!! Now that is bad!!! Maybe you can try the water bottle thing too. Good luck.

Get a water gun or spray bottle or something, and spray him when he gets up there. Or find something else that he doesn't like or is scared of (my cats have always been afraid of a wildly shaking plastic bag). Or grab him off the table, give him a swat and drop him on the floor. Eventually, he'll get the idea that "on the table/counter" = "something I don't like" and will stop.

i agree with everyone else.. try the squirt bottle and dont leave any food out.. when youre eating meals have the bottle on hand.. if you keep locking him up now hes never going to learn that the cant jump on the table and steal your food while youre eating.. my cat and my dog both did those things and also chewed things around the house.. it was suggested that we buy this bitter apple spray it supposedly tastes really bad to them and once they taste it on the object they chew or try to eat they wont anymore.. well we tried it and it had absolutley no effect it was like it wasnt even there ..if anyone suggests that to you dont bother wasting you money

Spray bottle. Also, cats won't eat food that is left out b/c it gets stale and they are picky. Also, don't leave food or bread bags out. Feed your cat fresh, healthy cat food during mealtimes.

Try the spray bottle thing that everyone has suggested - I have used this before on cats and it does work. Also, make sure that he is eating the right food for his age - at 5 months he should be on kitten chow - he may not be getting the nutrients he needs...or he may not like his food and you could try another flavor.

I have a dachshund that climbs onto our pub height table, then across to the kitchen island and raids food while the cats watch and laugh. I now keep our bread on top of the fridge and any other edibles across the kitchen or in the pantry. Silly mountain goat dog.

Get a water gun or spray bottle. Every time the cat jumps onto the counter spray him. You can also try double sided tape on the counters and places where you don't want him to go. Cats do not like the sticky feeling and will usually jump down. Both will take some time and patience for him to train.

In my experience, once I got my cats fixed, they calmed down about stuff like that. Squirt bottles do work well, but as for me, I always allowed my cats to get on the tables and counters. I just didn't leave food out.

Good luck. We have a ten year old cat that is still bad about this. Spray bottle never phased her. She might get a treat if she stays down or when she gets down. Otherwise we just keep putting her down, sepetate room when needed and never leave food out. She eats everything fruit,
veggies, bread, etc

We have two other cats that are well behaved around food.

Squirt gun! We have 2 cats and a couple of squirt guns around the house. When they see us reaching for one of those, they stop doing whatever they are doing and run away! Cats hate it!

HAHAHA!!!! MIne gets on the counter and pushes the bread off for the dogs.
You could try tin foil on the counter, doesnt' work with my cat
Or spray bottle, doesn't work either.
I bought a bread box and now hide all the bread. She's been much better since I hid the food.
