Carter's has information about this on the front page of their website. Here is a link to the information. Best of luck to you! http://www.carters.com/Corporate/tagless_message.aspx
Has any one seen the problem with the Carter's tags that are causing a rash on our kids? I saw a terrible picture of a little guy who had his tag/stencil stuck to his skin that had pulled his skin apart. I heard that it was from the fall '07 line, and I have some hand me downs that are from this time frame. How concerned should I be? I don't want to panic about something that is unlikely. Any input?
This is not a standard tag- its "tagless" meaning stuck to the fabric as a decal.

My daughter was born in July of 2007 and wore a lot of carters clothes from birth to 9 months and never once had any issues. She almost exclusively wore the onesies and one pieces until she was 6 months. I wouldn't worry.
Fact.
I bought a lot of these tagless Carters from the 07 line. My daughter did NOT have a reaction to the tags. If your child is not having any symptoms or visible signs of being allergic to it (millions aren't suffering), don't worry about it. But if there is a reaction, you can contact Carters. I know they will refund your items immediately without a receipt. They will send you a pre-addressed mailer and you just send the items back. Again, most children are not affected by the tags, but if yours is, stop immediately and return the items to Carters.
Hi M.,
There was a news report on TV about this recently. It was either KTLA-TV 10 PM news or KNBC-TV 11 PM news - I watch both and can't remember which did it. They would have more info on the websites.
There is a problem with some kids but other kids don't have a problem. You can be safe and not use the clothing or maybe cover up the tags with another piece of material. Your child may not be allergic but you never know.
Hope this helps.
Fact, but here's a tip: Try using fabric tape to cover the tag. It allows you to keep the clothes, the tape is inexpensive, easy to apply, and it will give you peace of mind, just in case your little one is sensitive to the ink.
I remember the Carter tags being really sharp and the corners hard and pointy. I never mentioned it to anybody and I stopped buying Carter's clothing, because it tore my baby's skin up around the neck. I cut all the tags out.
The reaction varies according to each baby. My husband and I noticed that my son would wake up with a very mild rash on his back almost every morning. Once I heard about the tag reactions, I stopped putting him in Carter sleepers and the rash went away right away. Some babies unfortunately have had more severe reactions.
Carter's has been amazing about handling this issue. If you go on their website, they have information about the rashes and will accept and refund any clothes you wish to send back for the full MSRP price. They also sent my son a teddy bear as a little apology.
BTW, the 2007 line is the one with the big white box around all the tag info (Carter's name, the size, etc.). But if you feel uncomfortable with the Carter's labels with the smaller box around just the size, they'll still take those back as well. Good luck!
It's fact. I got the re-call information e-mail from the consumer safety administraion. You can also find the info on the Carter's site. Not every child gets a rash though. All of my kids had '07 Carter's clothes and none of them had a reaction.
If you are worried, just cut off the tags!
probably unlikely. it would be all over the news, and they would have recalled the stuff.
Hi M.,
Here are two other sites that have info regarding the tags and rashes...
I would only be concerned it your child has sensetive skin. I have never had a problenm with it. Since its like a silk screened material sometimes when you put it in the dryer it cracks and then you could just pick it off.
both my 6 year old daughter and 19 month old son wear Carter's, my daughter still stuff from last year's line and my son when it was new last year, and i think hand me downs this year from then. all of it was from both Target and Mervyn's. i've never personally had a problem with either the boys or girls clothes, other than ANY tag will bug a kid sooner or later. if it really concerns you, just cut out the tag. my daughter seems to notice all tags (on all brands, i shop everywhere) and say they scratch or itch, while my son (go figure) notices nothing. i just cut them out and problem solved. there's no sense in throwing away good clothes if you don't have to. hope this helps.
Dear M.:
About the time I gave birth to my son, I developed an allergy to latex. When they removed the tape across my caesarean incision, the top layers of my skin all came off also. Soon after, when my baby son got a test done, I removed the bandage from his arm and it had melted his skin and it all came off together. Shocking, but we both healed with no scars and now we know to avoid latex.
This Carter's thing has been linked to an ink allergy and things like that and latex allergies are not that common but if you are affected by it, you simply avoid it. You really shouldn't panic about it at all. It's not likely that your son is allergic but it's good that you're carefully watching out for the signs.
Best wishes,
M.
Hi M.:
I have two daughters, 3YO and 7M, who have used both hand me down and new Carter's clothes with tags and tagless. No rashes or itcheys here.
I think you're safe if you keep an eye on it.
Good luck!
It's very true. In fact if you ring Carters they will take back all the clothes with that big tag.
What about cutting the tag off of the item of clothing for safe measure?
