Does anyone know if it is legal (and safe) in the state of VA to have 3 carseats side by side in the backseat?

And if so any suggestions on which brands/styles would fit? It would be 2 toddler convertible seats and an infant carrier.

Thanks so much.

Added after reading a few responses - we are planning for #3 currently and trying to budget/determine what we should do. We currently both drive the kids equally (I drop off at daycare and he picks up) so unless I quit my job we would need to be able to transport 3 kids in two different cars and really cannot afford to buy two new vehicles. We have looked at SUVs with 3 rows and that solves the main problem but as long as I am working and my hubby has his odd schedule we would need two cars. I currently have both of my kids in Britax Marathon's and LOVE them. I feel they are amazing seats and I feel safe with them in those. I appreciate the feedback - I will continue doing my research.

What can I do next?

My oldest is turning 4 this month. I also have a 16 month old and a 4 month old. We had to purchase a van to install my baby's carseat. There is not a vehicle out there - that we could find, and we looked at many - where 3 carseats fit without touching each other. We were told by the Sterling Fire Department, who installed our carseats, that you could not have car seats that are touching. After looking at every model of minivan we settled on the Hyundai Entourage which provides the most space in between the 2nd and 3rd row seats. Hope this helps.

I am a Police Officer and a certified car seat installer. To my knowledge there is no law against it. The most important thing is to have them installed correctly. The only problem with having 3 in there is that the infant seats are designed to move in the event of an accident. The front of them actually should lift and help absorb the shock of a sudden stop. Unless you have a pretty big car this could be a problem due to the size of the Marathon's I would suggest if you have to keep what you have try to position them together and put the infant carrier on the end so that it's movement is not restricted. Good Luck!

Well, Sunshine Kids make a narrow carseat that is still very comfortable for kids, and is rated one of the best on the market. It is right up there with the Britax carseats, but doesn't take near as much room. They are just as expensive though. They actually last longer than the Britax, with an expiration after 8 years instead of 6. The Sunshine Kids Radian 80 goes up to 80 lbs so you would never have to buy another carseat for your child again! They are also airline approved. They fit three across in the backseat too. Not a lot of carseats are narrow enough to do that! I just bought two of them for my kids. I will never have to buy them seats again, but boy was it a whooper. I did get them at a website that had free shipping though. I suggest looking them up online and reading some of the reviews. Best of luck!
