Carrageenan? "Ok" or "Stay Away"?

Been doing a lot of homework on this mystery chemical and getting so many mixed reviews. Supposedly it serves as a binder for products simlar to the effects of gelatin and is derived from Red Seaweed. There is a lot of back and forth as to whether it is safe for consumption as some say it causes cancer and colitis, etc. FDA says it is fine to consume since it is generally trace amounts in food, drnks, etc. But if you consume "trace amounts" daily sometimes more than once daily (think yogurt, creamer, chocolate milk, etc.) I would think that would begin to add up and those trace amounts are not so little anymore.

So, I am curious to know what you all have heard, believe, etc on this matter.

So What Happened?

I certainly agree with the concept that you cannot stay away from every bad thing. When I saw it was derived from seaweed I thought, wow, seems pretty natural. And while I am far from a conspiracy theorist, I can't help but look back on the days of the fabulous, FDA approved, little product that would cure every fat man & woman's weight problem (note the sarcasm!)....you know, Fen Phen...that didn't end so well, did it....Thank you FDA for that approval! Anyway, just wondering what the world of Mamapedia's take on this was.

If I worried about everything I was told to worry about I would have no sanity. If I am given an option of BPA free I will take that one, if I am given the option of real sugar vs. fake I will go with real, if I am given the option of gluten free I will try that one. Over all, I pay attention but do not allow the alarmists to alarm me all day every day. Here is the thing, someone thinks something may be bad, they gather enough information on it and are able to convince enough people to do a study. They perform a study that leads to more studies, and continue along this path until conclusive evidence is available and then they release that information, you know the CONCLUSIVE stuff. Before the internet, you tube, medical blogs, FB, twitter and all the other crud we have to keep us plugged in we did not know about these studies until the CONCLUSIVE evidence was released. Now that everything is everywhere we know when a study is just beginning and we are released false or inconclusive evidence and take that as truth. We all need to work on finding out more factual information before jumping the bandwagon.

Great question - I've wondered the same thing! It is in our almond and coconut milk if I remember correctly.

I've never heard of it. It sounds like another marketing ploy to use scare tactics in order to force the consumers who are scared to buy something more expensive.

I refuse to live in fear of everything that may or may not cause cancer.

I'm very skeptical because I see it as marketers preying on those who do live in fear.

I'm NOT saying... you live in fear.

Bottom line, go get your hands tested right now and chances are high that there is arsenic or worse on your skin. Sure arsenic is bad... MODERATION.

Stay away from this chemical.
Go to your local health food store and
buy seaweed if you want to eat
seaweed.

I have read that it's an inflammatory which sucks for me. I still eat it because I love my almond milk.

Yes, I have heard of it as I have read about so many other things that cause cancer, other diseases, and health problems such as genetically modified food (corn, syrups, soy, etc). I just try to keep a balance and eat as healthy as I can, but it is impossible to avoid all the things that at the present time are dangerous, or bad or unhealthy. For instance, one of the most prescribed diabetic drug and consumed highly by people for years, it is now producing serious side effects. The same will occur with food, other drugs and so many more things, but the actual problem is that we will never know what exactly is bad at some point; many of scientific studies are done every day worldwide, and many things that are good at some point will be bad later for people. This is like a cycle, a scary cycle, but we cannot live based on that and eat nothing.
Carrageenan is found in dairy and non dairy, like someone mentioned here, Almond milk. I love Almond Milk but I consume Silk pure almond, chocolate and vanilla flavor (Blue Diamond (all of them, vanilla, unsweetened, etc contains carrageenan).
It is hard, just do what you can to eat healthy, avoid mainly processed food, prefer organic from a reliable farm; inform yourself as much as you can, but do not get crazy about it, be happy, laugh and exercise a lot! These last 2 things are sure the best to keep you healthy!

I've been curious about this also. I know it's also in a lot of toothpastes. I've tried to limit our consumption on the products that have it in there. I was surprised to find carrageenan in lunch meat the other day. I know we can't avoid everything and there's always a different report everyday...one day this is fine for us, the next it's bad so I guess moderation is the key!
