Car Seats - Oak Park,IL

I hate my infant seat! I never carry it around, I just take him out and put him in a sling or ergo while running errands, etc. My question is, does he have to be in an infant seat, or can I put him in a convertible car seat now, rear facing, obviously? I was thinking about the Fisher Price Safe Voyage if anyone has any opinions on it. My son will be 6 weeks old on Thursday and is probably getting close to 10 lbs now.

What can I do next?

The BLVD is great, but remember car seats expire after 6 years, so if you plan to keep him 5pt harnessed any longer than that, I do, then you would be purchasing another seat anyways. My DD is in a Roundabout now and will be moved to a BLVD when she hits the height or weight limit. The nice thing about the infant seats is that you can stick the covers over them since its harder to get new babies in and out of coats. Its not safe for babies and kids to ride with coats on in the car seat. But, no he does not have to be in an infant seat, just make sure the seat you get has lots of newborn padding, most can be removed after the baby is bigger. Happy shopping!!

Yes, you can switch him to a rear facing convertible but at 10 pounds some parents find they can't get as good of a fit and the seat has to be at the maximum recline. You are allowed to use rolled towels to help support the baby but do not attach any other after market devices sold...they are not safe...and try to keep him rear facing until the limits of the seat (usually about 35 pounds check the seat). Just curious, what infant seat do you have???? I loved the convenience of mine with both kids...I never carried it though, always used it with my Combi stroller.

The Fisher Price Safe Voyage is made by Britax and is a good seat...BUT they stopped making them about a year ago..so any seat you buy will already have one less year of use and if you need a part it will be almost impossible to get one...other good choices are any of the Britax's Marathon, Boulevard, Decathalon. One of those has an infant insert I believe...that may give you a better fit for your little one. (bummer you just missed their huge sale they were dirt cheap), but still they can be had for about 229 online, other recommended seats are the Evenflo Triumph ADVANCE, it harnesses to 50 pounds and has good review. My personal choice- the Marathon, I have 4 of them and have no complaints, Britax seats are so much easier to use, extra's that make life much easier, comfy for kids and have lots of cover patterns (hey it's nice to choose something cute as you'll be looking at it everyday for a long time!).

Good luck with your search!

I have a Britax Boulevard
http://www.britaxusa.com/products/product_detail.aspx?ID=1

It says 5-35lbs. rear facing. So I would just check with the model you are looking to buy, but most of them are probably able to fit a newborn.

Good luck!

I recommend the Britax Blvd too. I had the Roundabout and that is for a lower weight and height (I think 40LB) so I had to buy another car seat when he was 2 1/2. The Blvd. will take longer for them grow out of. I only used my infant for like 6 or 8 months.

I own the Fisher Price Safe Voyage Deluxe and its great. I highly recommend it to you. You can use it rear facing with your baby as long as he weights 10 lbs...which he does. I got a great deal at Albeebaby.com for 129.00 plus free shipping. Any other questions about the seat I would be happy to answer.

Hi M.,
I am going to 2nd everything that B. M said (you'd think that we were clones, as we are both "B. M's").

My youngest HATED the carrier. We had to make a new purchase (since my older son was using the convertible). I think he was about 2 or 3 months at the time. We have the Britax Roundabout (but any of them made by Britax are great and so worth the money). I like how the straps can get nice and secure around my little guy. I am also very happy with how tight the seat fits into any of our cars (and how EASY it is to install). Some of the seats out there don't get a good, tight fit and you can wiggle them. There is no wiggle room on either of my Britax seats (and I can't say that for any of my friends seats).

Anyway, before this turns into a short novel . . .
