Capsaicin

Has anyone tried capsaicin cream for muscle, joint or nerve pain. I tried Capzasin roll on today, I put it on my neck and behind my right ear early this afternoon. It burned a little bit when I first put it on but the burning sensation went away and I forgot that I put it on. Well, around 9:00 p.m tonight I took a shower and the hot water caused the most horrible burning sensation at the site where I put the capsaicin. I felt like I had 3rd degree burns on my neck and behind my ear, I could not stand it, the only thing I could do was run cold water over it, it took almost an hour of running cold water over it before the pain decreased to a tolerable level. Seriously, I thought that I was going to have to go to the ER. My neck is now bright red and still burning, it now feels like a bad sunburn.

The label does not say not to take a shower when using this and you have to take a shower sometime. If you used this product, did you wash it off prior to taking a shower? How did you wash it off? I do not plan on using it again.

What can I do next?

You should probably never ever use such a product on sensitive skin areas like necks and behind ears. It's more for knees and other places that are toughened up.

Hold a compress with some cider vinegar on it. It should help bring down the sting because it will break down the oils some.

I have not used capsaicin for pain but I've read about it often. My mother had post herpatic neuralgia and said it helped. She never mentioned a burning pain with showering but she wouldn't have allowed shower water to touch her skin in that location anyway.

I've been curious about it's usefulness for muscle pain. Did it reduce or eliminate pain for you? If so, I'll try it and experiment to find a way to use it without pain in the shower. I often have pain in my shoulders and neck from tension. I would like to get away from taking so much Ibuprofen.

L.,
I am so sorry that happened to you. Maybe you are allergic to it. You might try putting some aloe vera on it.
Shaklee makes a great joint and muscle pain cream. I teach exercise classes and don't know that I could without it. It cleared up my plantar faciitis. Also last night I pulled a muscle in my back. I had my husband rub the cream on it and I was fine this morning.
If you are interested in it, let me know.

I have used the cream form and you should only use a pea drop size. Did the instructions state anything about how much to roll on? Showers do reactivate the heat. It takes some getting used to, but it is a good product. Use less.

Oh my goodness. I just got out of the shower after having put Capsaicin on my shoulder this afternoon (about 6 hours ago). I couldn't believe the burn. My shoulder feels like I have a bad sunburn. I wish I had seen this before taking a shower, but I only found this when looking to see what was going on. I'm pretty sure I'm not allergic to hot peppers (the hotter the better for me), nor am I allergic to any other food. Lesson learned. So much for trying to heal the pain!

Hi L.,

Capsaicin is the active ingredient in hot peppers. That being said you may have had an allergic reaction or have a sensitivity to it. There are warnings about using capsaicin under certain circumstances like broken skin, skin irritation, hot pepper allergy, other drug allergies, reactions to dyes, foods, preservatives. Some say that you shouldn't use if you are breastfeeding or pregnant.

With a roll-on you may have simply used too much. There's not really a way to measure it. You didn't say why you were using it but I use a pain cream that not only alleviates muscle pain but heals as well. Let me know if you're interested.

Regards,

M.
