Recently we trained our 5 month old daughter to fall asleep onher own and its been working out great. she can now fall asleep without being rocked or bounced and her afternoon naps are much longer. the problem is that she was sleeping 9 - 11 hours at night, but now when she wakes up she cant fall back asleep without her pacifier because that is part of what we used to train her to fall asleep on her own. she is now back to waking up 2 -3 times a night. i really dont want to do that cry it out but it might be our only option. i also dont want to totally wean her from the pacifier yet. has anyone had this problem?

What can I do next?

Hi A.,
Can she put his pacifier in his on mouth yet? What I did with my now 10 month old is put a few extra pacifiers in the crib so that he always could find one. I wouldn't get rid of the pacifier yet. I found that a year is a good time. If she can't put it in her mouth yet its only a matter of time before she can. Good luck.
Chris

I don't think you have much to worry about with the weaning from the pacifier thing yet. She's still quite young. As for the waking up crying for the pcifier thing, there are several options. Some people choose to keep spare pacifiers in the crib, near the baby's hands, while she sleeps. This allows her to me able to find it herself when she needs it, even in the dark. Some people use those pacifier leashes, that atttach the pacifier to the jammies. Some think this is a strangulation hazard though. So you would want to make sure that the leash part of the unit is not long enough to cause problems. You might also consider a security item or a different type, like small stuffed toy. We personally had out own method that worked AWESOME. Our son had a small bunny puppet that he liked to sleep with. Even when he was crying for the pacifier, he always seemed to have the bunny in his grasp. So we found a way to attach the ring of the pacifier to the bunny. In our case, we used a modified pacifier leash. He knew that wherever his bunny was, he could find his pacifier. It took no time at all for him to be able to do this in the middle of the night too. The reason we chose the modified leash was so that we could detach it during the day, and for cleaning. Hope some of this helped.

I did the same thing with my son when he was six months. I thought it better then, than later. I started with not giving it to him with naps, and then worked our way to bedtime. He did cry for a night or two. He still wakes up at night, however he has been off his "nuk" since six months.

Good Luck...

My son is 2 1/2 and we have struggled with the pacifier since day 1. He had to have it all of the time. Whenb he was your daughters age I put a couple of pacifiers in one corner of his crib and pointed them out several times. After a couple of days when he would wake up in the middle of the night he would whine, then I would hear rustling, and then he would fall back to sleep. He knew where to find the pacifiers. Hope this is helpful:)

We had the same problem with our son (who is now 2 1/2 and w/o the pacifer). I used to get up, put it back in his mouth and he went right back to sleep. He would never find it himself and I couldn't let him cry it out. It was kind of a pain- but once he had it-- he when right back to sleep.
