Can't Get Massage Oil Stains Out of Baby's Towels (Or My Bedcover!)

I'd love to get some advice. I use California Baby Calming Massage Oil on my daughter every night after her bath. I love that it's non-toxic, pretty much edible, full of essential oils and good stuff...except it leaves major motor-oil type stains on her towels and even on my bedclothes!! I've tried washing the towels in hot water, and even pre-treating them with some non-toxic stuff I got from BabysRUs, but the stains are not budging. I love the oil and my daughter really enjoys the night-time massages, so I can't see myself giving it up -- but the stains are driving me nuts! Please help!

What can I do next?

have you tried lestoil? it smells but it gets out all kinds of stains. I've used it to get stains off my son's shirt from him crawling on the floor, and even used it to get car grease off of my clothes after playing around under the hood of a truck. It took both out with no problem... it really is amazing...but again it does kinda smell....

I know that you got a TON of advice but I just want to forward on a website that has stain removing ideas for just about EVERYTHING. I inadvertantly left a lipstick in the pocket of my pants and threw them in the wash. Needless to say, everything was ruined!! But I googled stain removal and found the following website: http://members.tripod.com/~Barefoot_Lass/index-2.html. Her ideas worked amazingly and I had most of the ingredients in my house!!

Good luck.

Hi M M-
Try using dawn dish detergent, and get a cotton covered pad to lay her on while you give her the message. Kudos for putting in the time w/her.

Hope this helps

Soak it in Dawn dish soap and then wash as normal. I use it all the time for oil stainsl. I spilled olive oil on my new shirt. I washed and dried it and it was still there. THen I found out about Dawn and I soaked it and it came out. Give it a try! It cuts the grease on dishes right! HA! It really does work.

You might try OxiClean but it is definatley not no-toxic and does have a pretty harsh smell. I used it on any stain that I cannot get out. If you let it soak for about 3-4 hours it will get almost anything out.

Try orange hand cleaner, in the automotive section. Rub it on the stain and let it sit. Then wash as normal

So, this is definately not non-toxic, but I just double rinse all my clothes to make sure it's all out, but Simple Green will work. At walmart it is usually in the automotive section, it gives dilutions on the bottle to use with clothes (so it is also made for that) but I just spray straight from the bottle. I only use it on those stains that don't normally come out, especially the oils, it WORKS. Also, my son has extremely sensitive skin, he has to use a prescription soap and lotion and we have an oil based lotion to prevent hives, much like a massage oil, so we have a very similar problem. If it gets to bother you too much, you should really try this. PS, it also gets blood out of anything and once they're running around, (at least for my 3 yr old boy), getting blood from the scraped knee out of the light pants is awesome!!

I was always taught to use baking soda first to absorb the oil. Rub the powder right on the spot, then try some of the other suggestions.

YOu could try just plain old baby oil if nothing else works. Also try contacting the makers of the product online here: http://www.californiababy.com/calming-massage-oil-4-5-oz.... them how to get it out of your clothes.Personally, I would try spray and wash or oxy clean or even dish washing soap like Dawn, it cuts the grease. Altho their site says their product is NOT greasy, lol.

Try Shout Advanced. I spilled cooking oil down my shirt and my husband washed AND dryed it without treating it. I thought my shirt was ruined so I tried the shout advanced...needless to say, no trace of the oil anywhere! You can also try using less of the oil when doing the massage...a little bit goes a long way. Good luck.

I use a drop or two of liquid dishwashing detergent(or a little more depending on the size of the stain) for any oil based stain that doesn't come out in the normal wash. Just scrub it in before washing and the stain will be out. Works on body oils, vegetable oils, chinese food oils, etc.

I would just designate one towel only that you use for this massage so that you don't ruin all your towels. And then just put down some kind of plastic sheeting or something under the towel & over your sheets/other bedding to further any more staining.

The first question I need to ask is what the content of your sheets are? In massage school, we were advised to use 100% cotton as polester blend will not release all of the oil. I mix all of my own oils and add a natural product called "Wash Out" (purchased at massage schools or companies that sell massage supplies like Massage Wharehouse) as indicated on the bottle. I also don't overload the washer. I often use no more than 2 or 3 sheets per large load, a large load quantity of detergent like Purex (Tide seems to stay in the sheets thus attracting more oil)and sometimes a dose of Borax. I then wash on HOT for maximum time and let soak for 20 minutes prior to the spin cycle (I wedge the lid open). After spinning, I may do a second rinse in HOT water. If my sheets have large amounts of oil residue prior to washing, I do this twice. The trick is to get the oil out before the heat of the dryer sets the oil into the fibers. (Smell your sheets after washing- if they smell like oil, wash again). I had one set of sheets that was soaked with oil because the lid had a crack in it. I followed this routine a few times and they did come clean- they were 100% cotton. I've never gotten the oil completely out of the polyester blend sheets and only use them if I'm in dire need. I hope this helps.

Rit Color Remover will work if your not worried about removing/lightening the color of the towels or bedcovers. If they aren't white then try making a paste of salt and water and place on the stain...let sit wipe off the salt and wash in hot water. Have you tried dish soap? They are made to cut grease and they can sometimes get the stain out too. Vodka may help too. All these methods are natural....better for you and baby:)

If the stains haven't been set in, try Dawn dishing washing detergent. Pre-treat and wash. That stuff gets out almost everything.
Also, email the company and ask if they have any suggestions.

Hmm...I've had good luck with Ecover stain remover--that's a nice non-toxic one.

But if that doesn't work, try rubbing the spots with Dawn--yes, the dishwashing liquid. It's worked well at removing some random olive oil stains from my clothes.

It may sound silly but next time try rubbing the spots with Palmolive (or any grease-fighting dish detergent) and cold water and let it soak over night.

I had the same issue and what worked best was Pine Sol. I know it soudsn weird but put a capfull on the stain itself and let soak in, then put a cap full in the washer when its full, along with the regular detergent. The stains come out great and your clotehs dont smell like pine sol at all. Make sure you use the regular pine sol, the good smelling stuff and the generic stuff dont work.
