I live on a lake and my daughter loves the beach/water but in the dead of summer the staff in charge of cleaning the beach falls short of keeping the beach as clean as I would like it to be we try and steer clear of the goose poop and find a place without any around us but it is present so I know you can get hand foot and mouth from feces but is it just human or from animals too? If you have answers please help I can't find anything online about it and I'm afraid to let her go back in fear of her getting it again

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

We also have a pool where we live so we will probably be headed to it instead she just loves the beach because there are no "rules" she is allowed to run throw things etc.

welcome to mamapedia!!

No. You can't get hand foot and mouth from goose feces. It's in the water though. And that creates other bacteria that can cause you and your child to be sick.

I would google it and see what you get with goose feces. It's not pretty. Kinda makes you wanna stay out of the water. Eeeww..

Why not just call your 24 hour doc/nurse line and ask them?

Hand, foot, and mouth cannot be spread by animals or to animals (per the Mayo Clinic web site). However, goose droppings can carry many different parasites, bacteria, viruses, and fungus (per the Internet Center for Wildlife Damage Management website). If there is a lot of goose poop, I'd find somewhere else to hang out.

It's not HFM you need to worry about. It's e-coli and other bacteria.

I don't know why you couldn't find anything on line.. I just went and found this:

I just asked Siri what can goose poop transmit to humans?

I don't believe so but that's a question for your doctor I think to be sure.

We lived on a lake for many years. Had ducks and geese. While they didn't really come up onto shore our kids just wore rubber boots and shoes if they were down by the water and didn't put things in their mouths. I would think that would be the concern (ingested).

How old is your daughter? If it's a real problem, I'd probably take a pass.

You don't get hand, foot and mouth from goose poop, but you can get other illnesses. To me swimming at a beach is always more enjoyable than swimming in a pool, even though there are the risks associated with nature. Given a choice between fresh water and soft sand, or hard concrete and chlorine I will put up with a little goose poop anytime! You should be fine swimming at the beach as long as you practice good hygiene, wash hands (bring wet wipes or sanitizer) before you eat anything, don't drink the lake water and shower and towel dry after swimming (to prevent swimmers itch).
