Can You Double the Chocolate Chips in a Recipe?

My son loves homemade tollhouse choc chip cookies. Has anybody ever tried doubling the amount of chocolate chips the recipe called for? What happened? Were they good or too soft or too much chocolate?

What can I do next?

Off topic a little but have you ever made chocolate croissants. Just buy the premade dough and throw 10 + chocolate chips in before you roll them into the croissant shape and then bake as directed. Very yummy!!

You can double the chocolate chips, but expect them to be a bit flat.

I would try adding 1/2 again as much. So if the recipe calls for 8 oz, instead of doubling to 16 oz, use 12 oz.

Absolutely!
That's the only way I make them!
(I always double the vanilla extract, too.).
I like just enough cookie to hold the chocolate together!
For a nice twist - do double chocolate but make 1 part semi sweet chips and 1 part milk chocolate (or white chocolate).

I don't measure the chocolate chips, I just dump them in! I have never had a problem using whatever looks right! I wouldn't double them though, I would do another 1/2 the called for amount, just in case.

I never stick to JUST the amount the recipe calls for, when it comes to chocolate chips. Everyone loves my choc chip cookies. :)

I usually only make them at Christmas time. And I put the entire bag of chips in AND add about 2 cups of m&ms. If I don't have enough m&m's, then I'll add some of the choc chips from another bag, lol.

As long as you use real butter (I do NOT bake with margarine), they are fine. :)

You can add extra, but I think doubling would be too much - there has to be enough batter to hold all that chocolate together!!!! LOl! I do add-ins to my cookies alll the time (choc, nuts, dried fruit) but the batter will only hold so much and then you're just left with a pile of add-ins/choc and not really any "cookie".

A little extra chocolate never hurts, but you have to be a bit careful because chocolate will burn and it's very bitter if that happens.

i have never measured - i use one bag per batch. they're fabulous if i do say so myself :)

my grandma used to use half a bag and we tease her that it's because she lived through the depression.

come to think of it i'm not even sure how much a recipe calls for...lol.

Absolutely! I actually never even measure them, I just make sure there are a ton in there. What is a cookie if you can't taste the chocolate???

My husband always doubles it! He adds two cups semi sweet chocolate, one cup white chocolate chips and one cup milk chocolate chips. He also swaps the white sugar for brown. He puts it in the fridge for a few hours before baking. They are definitely not good for the waistline, but they are great for the soul!

Doubling would make it hard to mix. I usually just throw them in and stop when it looks like enough. Otherwise, as mentioned, there is not enough dough to actually be a cookie. And you cannot get a good mixing in there, too hard to stir.

One thing I have done is chop a bar of chocolate or maybe even the chips but a bar is easier, and then throw the chopped chocolate in.
