Can My Straw Hat Be Saved?

It's time to clean out the closet. Ugh.

I have two black hats. The cuter of the two is a straw hat, which has, unfortunately, seen better days. Though the crown is still in its proper shape, the rim is super-floppy. Any ideas on how to save it?

If I can't get the rim to keep its proper shape, I'm going to have to toss it. The rim is wide enough, that with the floppiness, my daughter can't see at all when she wears it, and doesn't even want it for her dress-up box.

What can I do next?

If the rim is floppy, could you maybe consider cutting off the rim and securing the straw edges (sewing, clamping, weaving or whatever) and keep the crown, and use it around the house or even give it to your daughter for play. Other than that, it might have done it's time :-))

you should take it by or call a western hat store and see if they can't fix it. if not you could sew a button from the rim to the hat to flip it up. kind of like they did in the nineties.

Take it to a hat store and see if they can do anything to it.

soak it in the tub till its drenched and then try shaping it and use whatever you can to hold it in place till it dries. If that doesnt work, oh well, you were gonna hafta toss it anyway.
My husband does all our c'boy hats that way, felt and straw, usually with much success. If you try to trim the straw hat, it will shed, shred and eventually fall apart, I've done that before.
