I won't be cooking in these dishes. It is just to reheat leftovers. I just wanted to be safe with the food

What can I do next?

I've never seen melamine dishes say microwave safe but I would never. I have Corelle plates for reheating food in the microwave.

You can buy Corelle by the piece at Walmart. No need to buy a whole set.

No, melamine should not be microwaved.

Melamine dishes are safe to eat from, but when they're heated, it's a different story. There are lots of explanations online. Don't do it.

Technically, they are safe in the microwave, meaning they won't overheat, they won't shatter, they won't spark like metals do. However, that's not the issue. The chemicals in melamine react when they're heated and that's where potential health risks can occur.

No plastics are great in the microwave, period. Better to use a glass or stoneware dish. No plastic wrap either.

Well, apparently Harvard says I'm wrong. I still am not a fan of plastic, though.:)

In this day and age if it says "microwave safe", it's assuming you are putting food on it and then putting it in the microwave and then eating it. I have had melamine plates forever and we reheat food on them daily. If there was a legit concern, I'm sure they wouldn't be making them any longer and would clearly state, DO NOT MICROWAVE. JMO. Good luck.

If it says microwave safe, then it's safe to use in the microwave.

I don't see why not. I would microwave with it but then I am not the type to get into media hype about topics like this and be fearful.

I've read so many conflicting things on this. Even that it can depend on what types of food you're cooking.

I was using this glassware specifically for the microwave. It came with these vent-able plastic tops. Over time, the tops all became misshapen even heating on low heat.

So now I just use pyrex alone.

I've always heard they were made before microwave materials were common. That they overheat in the microwave and can put toxic materials in the food.

Don't have any idea if it's true or not but I use glass dishes just to be sure they're safe.

I would buy a few pieces of Corning and get rid of the melamine.

The melamine works but over time it changes and becomes brittle and chips. You never know when it is going to give out.

i don't own a microwave. i reheat all foods in a pot on the stove or on a cookie sheet or baking dish in the oven.
so no i would not put melamine dishes in the microwave, if you are concerned then err on the side of safety and don't do it.
