I am 37 weeks along with a very healthy (thank God) pregnancy. I have a very annoying head cold and cannot breathe! It's been two sleepless nights and I'm going nuts. The sheet from my dr. office says it's fine to take sudafed, but I am nervous about taking any kind of drugs during pregnancy. What do others think? I'm dying to take a sudafed to clear my nose for sleep tonight!!! Help.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for the responses! I took the sudafed last night - the original formula that you have to get at the pharmacy - and it was so awesome to breathe! I thought I'd have the best sleep ever - but turns out it made me wide awake!!! And I was breathing so nicely while watching tv until 4 am!!! Tonight I'll just suffer and hope to sleep better!

It's so funny that you ask this! I JUST was at my doc's office and asked the same thing, I'm 38 weeks and have NEVER taken a med during either pregnancy, so I was nervous. I was dying of a head cold and my doc assured me it's fine. Just one thing you should know, Sudafed changed their formulation so it could be sold on the shelf. That version is not ok, go to the pharmacist and get the original Sudafed. Hope you feel better! And good luck with your new baby!

It may not be appropriate is if you have high blood pressure or diabetes. Why don't you just call your doctor to make sure it is okay for you, this way you will not worry and can get better.

I took it while I was pregnant and did not have any problems.

Good luck with your new little one!

I was told with my first pregnancy 7 years ago that Sudafed was fine. I took it with no harmful effects. Then I was told with my second pregnancy 5 years ago, that it wasn't such a good idea. It could possibly cause a birth defect. But I agree with the other poster who says you're well past the risk at 37 weeks. Good luck and hope you feel better.

Sudafed very very slightly increases the risk of a birth defect that affects the intestines. Your baby is well past the stage of forming organs so there should be no issue. Hope you feel better soon.
