I have dark brown hair but recently had been getting professional highlights in light brown/blondes. So many highlights it was starting to be the majority of my hair. Anyway, I'm now laid off and can no longer afford to keep this up and my roots have grown out and it looks horrible.
Can I dye over my blondish highlights with dark brown (at home) or will it turn out some funky color? I just want to go back to my own color so I don't have to keep up with it anymore. Thanks!
go to a professional. Blonde is tough to cover up just like grey hair - the darker color will fade eventually. I would have a pro do it first and then continue at home with dye from a box when you notice the color start to fade. I dye my hair all the time at home. It's not hard. But to cover up the blonde you will need some serious color. they may even want to strip you hair first.
Totally agree with Rachel - go to the salon one more time and have them do an all-over color in your natural color. It will look great and you won't have any more maintenance after that. All-over color is a fraction of the cost of highlights because it's an easy process for the stylist. But I'd go to them because they will know exactly what color to use.
The bleached hair needs to be "filled" again with pigment and just dying over it will create a muddy to greenish cast because the "orange" base has been stripped out w/ the bleach. Frankly, I'd pop for a professional to work on taking you back to natural and then you can do the home dye jobs from there (former hairstylist speaking here).
Wait until your roots grow out a bit, then go to the salon one last time and ask them to perfectly match your roots (this will be cheaper than highlights)... it will be easier to maintain from there, AND there's less room for error if the highlights don't take to the dye in a box. Trust me, been there, screwed that up, cost me MORE to have corrected ;)
I've done it before. Just make sure you don't get an ash base or else it might turn green
I'm with the majority on this. Go to your regular salon one more time and let a professional take your hair from streaked to it's natural color. They guarantee their work and you will come out of it looking and feeling great.
Hey giirl ! I went to beauty school and i know this , Color from stores SUCK. They are horrible on your hair and you never know wht you are going to get . If you are going to get your hair colored get it done at a salon PLEASE . Because if the store color comes out funky it is harder to fix and sometimes just becomes a damaging disaster.. :) . Store bought color is the enemy. haha . great luck!
If you are going back to your original color, go to a salon and ask them to match the color to your roots. It will cost you more to do it this way but it will look best for all the interviews you will be going on!

Yes. Your high lights will pry accept the dye better and will be a different color than the rest of your hair but you can pry get it pretty close. To be honest if you can pick your highlights up and dye them before you put the dye on the rest of your hair. Give them maybe an extra ten mins you can pry get it even closer.
But in order to dye your hair alot of the time I get my hair bleached out then dyed the color I want so it comes out exactly as I want it too and not darker than I want.

I'd have a professional salon do your hair. I have a SIL that figured she could save some money by doing it herself and I think the highlighted hair turned green. I couldn't really tell what the color was, but it wasn't what she wanted!

Check first about dyeing your hair and being pregnant. I am not sure if you should or should not but I would ask about that first. You are early in your pregnancy right?
