Can I Do Sleep Training During Teething? and How Long Does Teething Pain Last?

My son is 9 months old, going onto 10 months in about a week. Some weeks he sleeps like a champ, through the night and other weeks, he will wake up 2 or 3 times a night. So one week, he will sleep great, the following week, he might wake up. Lately a tooth has been coming through. I am not sure how long "teething" is? If one tooth pops through, does it take a few weeks before he stops feeling the pain from that one tooth? I would like to start a sleep training becuase it is getting really tough on me. I am a working mom, so staying awake at work, is hard. I wanted to try letting him cry it out a bit before going to him, but I don't want him to be in pain and let him cry it out. I am not sure if I should wait.

What can I do next?

We were always trying to sleep train my son even through teething. We found that if we knew he was teething we would give him a little bit of Tylenol or some other type of teething medicine before he went to sleep and this would help him sleep through the night.

I wouldn't do CIO with him teething....poor little guy is in pain. Teething can last awhile too. My son was miserable from 8 months until about 15 months.
Have you tried the homeopathic teething tablets? You can get them at any pharmacy. They worked wonders for my son. Helped to relax him. I would pick some up. Hate to say it but I would definitely put off the sleep training if he's crying in pain. He's definitely going to need a lot of comforting in the coming months. Teething is very painful for them.
Good luck,
Lynsey

I think there will always be a reason for them to not be sleeping -- teething (which was always a guess for us anyway), cold/sickness, somebody travelling, guests coming, new teacher at daycare, etc. Life is always in flux somewhere. If he's in clearly in pain ONE NIGHT, and it's different from other nights, then do your usual, but I'd say to go ahead otherwise.

Good sleep for him is one of the best gifts you can give, and waking 2-3 times a night robs him of at least an hour of shut-eye, which he needs.

For us, I got out the iPod, and at the end of every other song, I'd go in and give a back-pat. For our first son, it worked great. For our second, me going in wound him up, so it was better for me to lovingly say goodnight and just go -- usually after 13 minutes, he'd be out. With our first, it was more like 45 minutes the first few nights.

Try giving him homeopathic Teething Tablets? That always worked for my boys when they were teething. Try them and see how that goes. God bless you and your family!!

I would not do CIO so I can't speak to that part of your question but regarding teething, I noticed that my son seemed to be comfortable as soon as the tooth broke through the gum. This has been consistent with all of his teeth so far - he just turned 25 months and has three to go.

Teething never seems to stop once it starts! Once they get the new tooth, another is just around the corner, and "teething" starts way before you can actually see anything. If you let teething get in the way, it might be 15 months or later before you sleep train. I found that certain teeth were tougher and more painful than others. We didn't have much of a problem after the front four until the molars. Those were terrible! If you're really worried about pain with a particular tooth, give your son Motrin right before bed. It lasts 6-8 hours so you won't have to wonder if it wore off!

Teething can last for months. He is in pain from a tooth BEFORE it comes through, not after. When he's crying, it's from teeth that are still under the surface, so when one comes through,he's teething the next tooht/teeth. I would certainly not leave my baby to scream at night from teething pain (and I worked fulltime when my kids were babies, I know about the fatigue)

We went through the first year of my sons life thinking he was teething every night. We gave him teething gel almost on a nightly basis, and occasionally, infant tylenol, when he wouldn't calm down. His first tooth just popped through now, around his first birthday. I feel pretty stupid for giving him so much medication for no reason. I would definitely recommend crying it out. Its the only thing that worked for him. Its very hard to do, and I cheated a lot, making it take longer. Was speaking to mom, she had 7 kids, she never had a sleeping problem when teething, she sleep trained them early and that was it. You can't really know when its/whats really happening anyhow...

Teething.... once it starts lasts all the way until he has a full set of teeth.
He is in pain and that is what is keeping him from falling off and staying asleep through the night.
PLEASE do not let him cry it out!
It is cruel and since he is in pain, he is acting appropriately.
Tylenol can be helpful, rubbing the gums with oragel or anbesol also helps temporarily. Also ricking him to sleep may help. The ricking motion is soothing to them when they are teething.
I remember my daughter (who is 2 now) having such a tough time falling off and I would get frustrated until I realized it was her teething. Seemed the second I put the Ora gel on her gums, she would fall right off to sleep.
I know it is hard on Mommy too....been there.
But I also know you understand that he is in pain.
I agree to wait until this subsides to begin your sleep training.
P.S. I don't really think the sleep training works permanently bc children go through so many phases that what works this month may not the next.
(But I do understand you needing sleep especially since you are a working Mom)
Good luck to you and your sweet baby boy.

I hope he gets through his teething pretty quickly and you get some rest also.

P.

My daughter is constantly teething, but if it's only one tooth, she's fine as soon as it's completely through the gum. I just wish she'd take a break now & then!

I would definitely not do it during teething. My daughter is the same age. Try the homeopathic tablets, or tylenol or motrin. I tend to use a combo of tylenol and baby orajel when it's really bad. Sometimes when you really just need sleep, and you've given him medicine to make him comfortable, he may still cry. Then I say it's up to you and how you feel, whether you want to let him cry, or whether you hold him, pat him, bring him into your bed, etc. Good luck--it's very hard.

Yes, you do can sleep training. He'll be teething for a while and I agree with the other moms who said that a consistent, good night's sleep is the best gift you can give him (and yourself). We used to think our daughter was teething all the time; in hindsight she wasn't really full-on teething & bothered by it until right before she'd actually cut the tooth. When her gums are red and inflamed and you can see the tooth just about to come it, we use Motrin for that night (sparingly but it works). It seems that once the tooth comes in, they feel better. Also, remember that sleep training, if done properly, should last for a minimal amount of time (we did it in one night with some help: dreamteambaby.com). Good luck.
