Can Babies See Ghosts?

My 2 month old daughter keeps looking at the ceiling laughing and smiling and doesn't want to take her eyes off of it sometimes (she'll turn her head back up towards the ceiling if I pick her up or move her).

Thing is, she does this in a room where I had a kitten pass away a few years ago. My cats often times will sit facing a corner in that room, looking up at the ceiling....very close to where he died, and I swear they are looking at him.

I know she could just have gas or just be smiling for other reasons, but she's very expressive and her expressions have usually been in response to some sort of visual stimulation. My mom also passed less than two months before she was born after a long battle with cancer, and I wonder if she could be looking at her. My mom in her last days said "I can't wait to see her". Maybe she's seeing her now....

What can I do next?

I believe she is seeing ghosts. My son is 2 1/2 months and I swear from day one he's been looking at someone/something over my shoulder or towards the ceiling. My husband and I feel he is communicating with our grandparents, he will smile and "talk" to them, i think it is so amazing.

Hi S.,

First, I'm sorry to hear about your mom's passing. You had me tearing up. =( I'm not looking forward to the day I lose my mom. That has to be hard not having her with you. Second, congrats on your new baby. Enjoy this time as much as you can. =)

About your daughter, I personally believe she may be seeing your kitty or mom or even someone else. A lot of people poo poo on thoughts of ghosts or spirits. Whatever! For those that do believe, it has been thotoughly reported that babies see spirits. For instance, my son (22 months), woke up crying in the middle of the night two weeks ago. I turned the light on very dim in our play room (once upon a time, it was my dining room). Jason was "talking" to someone. He kept pointing into the adjoining living room & saying, "hi". None of my cats were visible since they're dark grey & blend into the darkness easily. Anyway, Jason kept "talking". I asked him who he was talking to. It sounded like he said, "she doesn't speak good English". Mind you, Jason says words & his sentences are babble. My grandma was from Ukraine & had a thick accent. She passed away when I was pregnant with my first son in 2005, so she never got to see any of my kids.

Anyway, my thoery is that anything is posisble. They do say that our loved ones actully see everything we're doing (which creeps me out while doing certain things if you know what I mean). Obviously your daughter is way too young to answer you, but if it continues when she's older, ask her questions about what she is seeing. That would help her know it's a good thing & not scary.

I absolutely believe babies can see ghosts. My daughter did the same thing when she was in her first few months of life. I like to think it was my Grandmother who was very dear to me and died a couple years before my daughter was born. My due date was the exact month and day she died. I ended up having her a day early but I believe that she is looking over us all. It's really quite comforting to know that she's still with us in some way. Good luck to you and your family!

S.,
I believe she can. I know some people will find this cookey, but thats fine, its not a belief that is held by all.. much like many beliefs.. Anyway, I wouldn't be freaked out about it, obviously whatever or whomever she is seeing is bringing her pleasure not problems. If it is your Mom, all the better I say. As for the cats, it is believed that they can see sprits of both animal and human origin, as is true of young kids. As time goes on and certain people "beat" that belief out of kids.. what I mean to say is, discourage their reports by saying "there are no such thing as ghosts, or that was just your imagination" kids pick up on the more accepted belief that they never saw anything, and as time wears on, they stop seeing it for real.. spirits are all around us, and apparently its been "beaten" out of you over time as well, or you may be able to see what she sees.. how cool would that be!
Enjoy,
M. F
