My 2 year old little girl smells everything. She smells her clothes she is wearing, she smells me and smells my hair, she smells her toys, food, books, hers and other people's shoes, she smells tools, i put our Christmas tree up not long ago and she has been even smelling the artificial tree, just everything. I have a 4 year old and nephews I have helped raise since they were born and i have never seen a child smell everything like my 2 year old does so I'm just wondering if anybody knows why she is doing this?!?
Thank you,
-S.

Her sense of smell is developing. She's just exploring with her nose. The next phase will probably be licking so don't be alarmed. You will have to tell her not to lick everything but she may try. This was the nastiest phase my daughter went through.

I have no idea.
Our son as a toddler went through a stage when he thought stinky feet were funny.
Give it a few weeks and she'll move on to something else.
Or you exhaust the possibilities by exploring smells/scents with her - foods, fruits, candles, etc.

I wouldn't worry about it. Smells are interesting. Now that she is noticing them, she's engaged and curious. Sort of like when toddlers first start putting objects and their words together... I used to have a toddler in my daycare group who would love to be carried around and she'd point to everything, wanting the words for the objects. It's information-gathering at its purest. :)

When my son was 2 he went through a licking phase. You name it he would lick it - walls, floor, items in stores. Your daughters smelling phase is so much better. She will get over it.

She's two. Two year olds do all kinds of funny and strange things. Tadpole is right.

Her sense of smell is developing. Both my kids did that. She will work herself out of this.

Hi S.,

I agree with the responses below. She'll outgrow this and she's exploring. I say get down on the floor and smell right along with her. Have fun with it. She'll be off to another phase soon enough. :-)!! S.

This is pretty normal. It's a sense that she is discovering.
