Do you put him to bed with a bottle? Meaning, does he fall asleep with it in his mouth and hold it all night? If so, then you are at fault and he has bottle rot. The milk sat in his mouth all night and decayed his tooth.
My son started to get his teeth at six months, he is now almost 9 months. Recently a black dot appeared on his first tooth. I noticed something on the tooth when it first started to grow but now the dot is dark. It looks like someone marked him with a black pen (from what I can see for the whole 30 seconds I have to fight with him to keep his mouth open =)) Others tell me it cant be a cavity because he it too small??? I'm scared to take him to the dentist because I don't want him to be put to sleep if they had to fix his tooth. Has anyone ever seen this on a child so young? Thanks in advance!
Thank you to all moms... it was not a cavity. It was a gray spot from his milk and went away in about 2 months.

Yes an 8 month old can have cavities. Take him to the dentist. You should be taking your child to the dentist when they get their first tooth. You are scared to take him because they may have to put him under to fix it, are you scared as well to have a child with rotten teeth? Come on do what is best and take him in, let a doctor help make your decision. There are so many dentist with different philosphies find one that works for you. We go to Teddy Bear Dentistry in Irvine and the are wonderful, no traumatic experinces at all and the earlier you take them the better.
Many dentists have different procedures and you do not know for sure if your child will need to be sedated until you actually go to the dentist. Do not let it get worse because it can damage the roots and gum as well as the tooth.
THere's my 2 cents. Now go make an appointment.
Kids World Childrens Denistry in Riverside. Dr. Beam and his staff will guide you with trustworthy advise. If you cant get to him atleast call first before you go anywhere else, takling to them will tell your gut to go there (trust your gut). Good Luck and tell Dr. Beam I said hi
Take him to the dentist! It's better for him to get used to someone looking around in his mouth at this age then going for the first time at 3 or 4! My kids have been going since their first tooth sprouted, they are 3 and 6 and LOVE going to the dentist. Of course, they haven't had any dental work, otherwise maybe they wouldn't LOVE it! LOL!! But seriously, I'd have it looked at. Maybe it is just a stain that needs to be cleaned off.
Let us know what happens,
M.
If your son is fed formula, it sounds like stains from the Iron in the formula. The same thing happened to my son around 10 months. The DDS polished it off and I made sure I brushed his teeth after each feeding and he was fine! I would definitely take him to the DDS to at least have it looked at and make sure it is not a cavity!
:)
There is such a thing as dental birth defect. I have them from being the third child in as many years that my mother gave birth to. They appear as brown dots on my teeth, (yes, even the permanent ones).
There may have been an injury too. My son's tooth came in black because he hit his mouth and injured the tooth before it grew in. Children this young do not get a lot of dental work done becasue they will lose that tooth. So take him in and see what they say. Stop worrying too much, the baby knows that too.
That sounds exactly like a cavity and no, he can't be too young. Some babies get a lot worse. It comes from going to bed with a bottle or nursing at night. My son has the same thing and his dentist said to keep an eye on it. It is small so there is no need to do anything, whew! Just take extra care to keep it brushed, etc. I would also go to the dentist for the peace of mind.

I mean this in the softest, most loving and supportive way...
A mother's fear of something should not stop you from taking the child to get checked by a Dr. or Dentist to make sure its ok and not something serious.
Keep in mind, that I was a 1st time mother 4 years ago and have had my son hospitalized about 3 times for bronchiol infections which have been diagnosed as asthma attacks.
Good luck

Take your son to a pediatric dentist. They have methods besides putting him to sleep, but if he really needs the tooth fixed, better to do it than to wait and the decay spreads to roots and they get infected -- happened to me as a kid -- not fun. Good luck.
My rec as I see all others rec is take him to the dentist now-don't wait-if it gets worse you'll feel guilty. I use to work for a ped dentist and it may be a cavity or it may be a defect-you'll never know unless you take him. As far as you being scared that they will need to put him under-if it is a good dentist they will only ned to do that if it is completly necessary. They have ways of treating uncooperative kids in the office. We did little ones in the office all the time-we also did do surgery in the hospital, but for special circumstance-ex special needs children or children who had a mouthful. Also your fear can be fely by your child. Take him get it checked and find out for sure what is going on-don't play the guessing game. You'll be glad you did.Good Luck! Hope this helped. L.:)
Take him to be check....you do not have to fix it .... Yet!!!and remember this is his first ones...new ones will arrive later in age.
Best regards..
Absolutely. Take him to the dentist and have it checked out. Better to take care of it now than let it turn into a rotten tooth. He needs these teeth for at least another 4-5 years until his permanents come in. You may want to ask your dentist or pediatrician about giving him fluoride drops to help prevent tooth decay. Also remember to practice extra good dental hygiene w/ him, he probably has very soft teeth or thin enamel and will be prone to tooth decay. Good luck to you!!! Don't be afraid...just be a great Mom and provider to your beautiful boy. :-)

My son has been seeing a dentist for a cavity that started after he was given back to back antibiotics for back to back double ear infections. They have not put him under, but used a flouride mask on the tooth that protects it from any further decay. Along with regular dental hygiene and check-ups, my son's tooth is fine and the dentist even put it on his other teeth as a precaution.
The only reason they would pull it, is if it had taken of the whole tooth...prevention is the best medicine, so get your kiddo to the dentist and get some peace of mind.
There are tons of Pediatric Dentists all over...mine is too far for you, but I bet if you called your insurance provider they could hook you up with a good one.
Good Luck.
ok I don't have all the details but my b/f son who is two just had to go to the dentist for a hole in the back of his tooth. He had to b put under which was terrifying for her, but he did great. The tooth came through that. They are on a vacation til this weekend but I will find put more and post it. I at least wanted to give you some positive words on the procedure. He was a little groggy for a few hours and then running around playing that night.
