My husband and I go camping every Memorial day weekend. We found a new place a few years ago, but they lock the gates over night. Now, we re taking our son 9 mos with us this time and I do not feel comfortable with bieng "locked in or out" of the campground. I want the ability to come an go anytime incase of emergency. With that said. I am looking to see if anyone has some recomendations. Not to far from Chicagoland, maybe 1-2 hr drive. We are not looking for very commercial, just a nice quiet capground that take pop up campers with electirc and water.

What can I do next?

Our favorite spot when we used to camp was Lake Kegonsa State Park in Stoughton, WI.

We always had tents but I believe they have sites with electric and water. They have a building with showers and toilets but there are also pit toilets throughout the grounds as well as water fountains. Toilets were always clean, not outhouses. Sites are wooded and you are not on top of the next camper, which is what we liked. I believe we preferred site 16 but it does not have water and electric. We hope to get back there some day soon and introduce our little ones to the wonderful world of camping.

We love Yogi Bear in Yorkville. They have activities for kids and adults. There is also an unheated in ground pool if it's hot enough. We have gone several times over Mem. Day and it's always warm enough for the kids to swim.

Pearl Lake in South Beloit IL. It's the last exit off the tollway before you enter WI. Exit and go west to Route 251. Turn south on 251. Take the first cut in to the frontage road ont he west side of 251 and the entrance is abut 1/4 mile further south.

There is a large lake for swimming (nice sand beach), fishing or paddle boat rental and there is a restaurant and snack bar on premises.

I've camped there since the mid 80's. It's very secure but you can get in or out as needed.

I'm not big on camping, but we have gone a few times, and our favorite spot is Lake Shelbyville in IL. The Sullivan Campground was an ideal place to take the kids because they have actual bathrooms and a shower building. They also have a pool and playground, so it is very family friendly.

Have fun!

Hi M. -

Look into Condits Ranch in Putnum county, IL. It is a very nice campground. My husband and I camped there for about 8 years with a trailer. They have spots for trailers, pop ups and tents. Good Luck and have fun.
