Calling Crafty People...

I am making my niece the decorative wooden letters for her Christmas gift. I am hoping that I do a decent job. Now I would like to make something similar for my other niece (other side of the family, so being different is not a problem). However her name is much longer and the letters get pricey. Can you think of anything I can use instead of the wooden letters? I will have them completely covered in scrap book paper. Cardboard seems to thin, would styrofoam work? Can I use modge podge on it? Would they be too light and tear up easily (shouldn't be a big issue if my brother hangs them up anyways)? I don't want to go cheap, but I don't want to spend a fortune just on the letters alone. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

So What Happened?

Thanks guys. It looks like I will be checking out our Hobby Lobby ~ it just isn't in a convenient place for me to check weekly. However if I watch for coupons or sales it could make it worth my trip. I will check out the cardboard ones and see if I think they will work. I am still throwing the styrofoam ones around in my mind, but as someone mentioned, cleaning the dust off may be an issue. Thanks everyone for pointing me in a direction : )

Do you have a Hobby Lobby nearby? I know they sell 3-D cardboard letters that look like the wooden letters. I have seen them spray painted with metallic spray paint and hung on the wall and it was super cute.

Yes, styrofoam would work and you can buy it in big sheets.

~My Mother used her creative skills and cut out all my kids' names (for the walls inside their rooms) + 'The Boys' and 'Lil' Sis' (for the outside of their bedroom doors) in different colored felt that comes with a sticky back and I LOVE them!!! The felt comes in standard 9x11 paper size so each letter is roughly that size and she cut out each letter in a different color coordinated to match their rooms decoration. You can buy the sticky backed felt in all colors at Michaels.

lol for a minute there I thought you meant "sly, manipulative and clever" people!

What Galwaygirl said...I just saw oversized cardboard letter at Micheal's which you can decorate. They are thinner than the standard wooden letters but I'm sure it'll get the job done.

I've seen foam letters out there at craft stores. I wouldn't think you'd have a hard time putting scrap book paper on them. And I'd think as long as they were put up on a wall they wouldn't tear. The only thing may be that they would get dusty and hard to clean if made out of foam.

Our craft store is always offering coupons, do you have a similar store that you could slowly purchase the letters in wood??

Hobby Lobby typically has these cute letters (ive used them for both my nephews nursery name letters) and they are less than $3 a letter and often times they take an additional 50% off at register.
Since you have time, keep your eyes out for the 50% off. Maybe check in every week or so if you can.

Cute idea with the scrapbook paper. I always painted and stenciled :)
