Caller ID

A few weeks back I posted a question about keeping our land line or getting rid of it (thanks for all the great comments). We have two young children so we've decided to keep the land line but reduce the "features" we have on it. We won't have caller ID anymore. I was wondering...our phone has caller ID that displays right on the phone, will that still work or do we need to have a caller ID service through the phone company?

I LOVE the caller ID but we'll save $50/month for the first 6 months and then $30/month thereafter so I'll learn to live without it but I was just wondering if by some chance we'd still get the callers number displayed. Thanks

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for the responses. Yes, the caller ID is part of a bigger package of options. We're going to the bare bones to be able to keep the phone in case anything happens and the kids need to call 911. I usually don't answer the phone if I don't recognize the number that's why I LOVE the caller ID. Thanks again.

We turned off the caller ID and call waiting a few weeks ago. We don't get very many calls on the land line so I guess I haven't missed the caller ID too much. The phone still tells me how many missed calls there are and when a call comes in from a cell phone the phone displays "cell phone".

To add just caller id is $9/month (we have Cox)...I took it off, we'll see if it drives me nuts and really is worth $9 to me.

Caller ID is no where near $50/ month. It is somewhere in the neighborhood of $7.50. Maybe you have it as part of a more expensive package of options. You may be able to get it on its own. I'd take a second look and decided what caller id is worth to you.

No, unless you pay for that feature it remains blank when a call comes in.

Proud:

To the best of my knowledge - it will say INCOMING.

I understand your keeping your land line. 911 calls are important with young kids!

Gamma's right. I have a phone that displays caller ID, but we have Magic Jack, and the caller's number shows up in the computer program, not on my phone. Though on rare occasions it has managed to get through to the phone. But usually it just says something like "incoming call" or whatever it says (I never pay attention to the screen on the phone when it's ringing!).

I do not have caller id on my home phone or call waiting. the phone says no data when i get a call. my telephone company offers a service online to see who has called you. so i can find out after the phone call if i miss it.

We were able to just keep caller id when we went to bare bones on our land line too. It is just $5. a month but worth it to me so I can see if anyone called and who when we get home.

It will display lines or dots if you don't have the service. I think some phones will say incoming call but for sure you will not get the caller information without the service.

We got rid of our land line b/c all the calls we got were from collectors/spam calls. Even when we had it, I'd only answer calls from people that I knew. If you don't know the #, don't answer. Even with my cell. If a name that I know doesn't pop up, I don't answer. If it's important, they'll leave a message.

Pretty sure you need the service to see it even if the phone has it.
But...$50/month for caller ID? Ours is about $6-10 or something--no where near 50! Maybe that's for all of your features? Maybe just add the caller ID only? It IS handy....

I have Vonage and called ID is included at no extra charge. I can even turn it off and on . Pretty nifty.

Our phones display caller ID when we have it and when we don't it says unknown or nothing.

Put all your lines on the Do Not Call registry and report any weird ones that call you. They may change their # but it has been working for me that the same ones stop calling. https://www.donotcall.gov/
