Caffeine Poisoning?

Has anyone experienced this before?

My caffeine intake over the last 4 years has been incredibly low. I do decaf coffee if I have some, decaf tea, and decaf soda occasionally. Well, today a coworker came in with a spare coffee that the barista accidentally made. It sounded yummy, so I drank it - it was a big one. The shakes came on, which I expected, and I really wished I was home to put all that energy to good use cleaning my home. :) I ate lunch about 1, and about 5 minutes later, started feeling really warm, nauseated, and had to go to the bathroom (sorry for the TMI). I still feel sick, and clammy, and urpy like I really want to throw up. It seemed to happen too quickly for it to have been lunch, and that was leftovers from last night's dinner, and I had no issues last night. Has anyone experienced this with caffeine before? I know that if you don't eat red meat for awhile, you can have some issues as your body tries to digest it, but I hadn't heard of it with caffeine before.

Update - Yes, I put poisoning in the title, but realize it isn't poisoning, more of an overdose. I was going to explain that in my original question, but I guess I forgot. :)

Since this was so concentrated, should I pump and dump? and for how long?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you ladies! I hadn't heard back on the pump and dump last night, so I asked my husband (I hate to throw out liquid gold!), and he supported me that if it made me feel better to dump, do so. I did have to breastfeed about 5 pm, but she didn't eat much. She had already had a blowout at daycare, but also was really runny about 8:30, which may have been caused by the left over caffeine. Wow, that stays in your system longer than alcohol!! Luckily, she was happy all last night and this morning, so if it was from that, that was the only affect.

It's funny, I used to drink caffeine all the time. I could drink it any time of day, and actually used to drink Jolt because it helped with my asthma. But, like anything when you abstain, I guess I am a lightweight now. Feeling that way was so NOT worth the free drink. From now on, I will just say NO!

Thank you all.

It's not poisoning, just a reaction to the caffeine. It can create very strong reactions like the ones you've described. Try eating a lot of protein and it should help to calm some of the effects. I have IBS and had to cut out caffeine because it was making me sick.

You feel sick because the stimulants shut down your digestive system (normal for stimulants) and then you ate. Stronger stimulants (like adrenaline, or Rx's or street drugs) actually "give" people diahrrea/vomiting... because when the digestive system shuts down it also wants to void itself. Basically, we have 2 nervous systems that work like a dimmer switch. Meaning they can both be working at the same time, but not well. Mostly as soon as one kicks in, it starts to shut the other one off. Mild stimulants and mild sedatives -like caffeine or antihistamines- allow a "dimming" effect, but adrenaline or Rx sedatives shut the other one off completely like a lightswitch. The 2 nervous systems are: Sympathetic -fight or flight- & Parasympathetic -rest & digest-. Digestion takes up a HUGE amount of energy, so it's one of the first things that gets shut down when our sympathtic nervous system (fight or flight) turns on (A similar thing happens when we're sick.. the body NEEDS that energy that goes into digestion for our immune system, so that we're not hungry when we're ill... our body shuts off the hunger reflex and ability to digest food).

ANYHOW ... Caffiene is a stimulant, so it shuts down our rest & digest nervous system. Most people have some degree of tolerance for caffeine... since you don't, you spiked into a sympathetic nervous system response, and now feel somewhat ill. It'll wear off.

You'll be okay and consider yourself reminded that you are pretty much caffeine intolerant. Thats how my husband is too, it always gets him weirded out (wired, shaky, dizzy) when he drinks it.

There is such as thing as caffeine overdose, as you can over do it and much like too much alcohol or any other drug there are side effects.

I have been caffeine sick before. Your body is not used to that much at one time. I drink one Dr Pepper a day but if I drink another at night then I get shakey and I have diarrhea. Also I cant' sleep.
My hubby can drink more than a pot of coffee a day and still sleep like a rock, but he's used to it.
No more biggie cafe latte's for you.

yeah, its a drug. There is tolerance and overdose like with any other drug, it will leave your system in a few days.

Oh...I've totally been there. Good luck sleeping tonight. Depending on the drink, it was probably a combination of the caffeine and sugar. I second the previous poster...eat some protein and drink a bunch of water.

It's the side effects of the caffeine, but not poisoning. Some people are more sensitive than others. Since you don't drink much caffeine, it will effect you more. It will pass.

I know that when I drink caffeine after a while of not having any I tend to feel a little shaky, dizzy and nauseous. So I do think it's because of the caffeine. Just try to drink plenty of water to help it washout through your body and you should be okay. Good Luck!

The digestive system is a muscle too- so it does have an effect. It can also cause low blood sugar when it wears off. I don't drink regular coffee any more because I have IBS. Even decaf can mess me up because it's acidic. If I do have coffee I eat a banana later to calm my digestive system down.

Happens every time I drink coffee! I only drink coffee 4 or 5 times a year when I really need some waking up to get through the end of the day. As you can guess I usually drink some tea or a coke when I need a kick, but sometimes a coffee sounds yummy! I almost always regret it.

I don't think I would use "poisioning" but you have too much, that's for sure.
Drink a lot of water and take an ibuprofen or a tylenol. When this wears off you are going to have one heck of a headache.
Some bodies can run on caffeine and others cannot. Sounds like you have been wise to keep your intake low!!!
One of my college room mates popped Dexatrim for a couple weeks while preparing for finals. She had the same symptoms you described one night.
We took he to the Health Center on campus. They told her to drink a lot of water, and when she could go to sleep, she should sleep. And the doc told her: get off the caffeine!!!

My system can not take caffeine either .I got very very sick and it was BAD.
I have not had any for like 15 years . The pump and dump? are you Breast feeding? if so I would defiantly pump and dump just in case your child has the same issue.
