Caffeine and Nursing

Does anyone know how long it takes for caffeine to be expressed in breastmilk? I don't drink much caffeine anyway, but on the occasion I do, I would like to know how to time it best so it won't affect his sleeping at nighttime. My son is 4 months old now, and he seems to be a little more sensitive to what I ingest than my first son was. Thanks!

What can I do next?

My little one also seems to have a sensitive tummy and is affected by what I eat. But I do have at least 1 Diet Dr. Pepper mid-afternoon once my kiddos are napping.....it's my treat :) Caffeine isn't really good for anyone (breastfeeding or not), but I'd say as long as you don't consume several cups of coffee (or whatever you like) not to worry too much about it.

Enjoy your new bundle of joy!

You should not worry too much. My doctor said you would have to be consuming a lot of caffeine for it to be harmful to a baby. An occasional soda would not hurt your little one. It takes 2-6 hours for anything to transfer from BM to baby so drink it around lunchtime if you are worrying about sleep at night. Congrats on your little one.

You may want to seriously consider not consuming any caffeine until you stop breastfeeding your baby. Babies consume everything you consume when you consume it. Your oldest seems to have been the "exception to the rule". My granddaughter just recently had a new baby and is breastfeeding. Everything she eats and drinks the baby is getting the same day she consumes it. So doesn't drink anything but Apple juice.

Caffeine is not good for your newborn. Stop consuming it!!!!

Hi,

I am a SAHM to a smart and handsome 26 month old and a beautiful 6 month old daughter. I am also nursing and have researched and asked lactation professionals about both caffeine and alcohol (wine, on occasion). Much of what I have read says that it runs through your breastmilk just like it would run through your system. I believe I was told about 3-4 hours for caffeine to run out of my system and about 1-2 hours after finishing a beverage for it to run out of my system. As a new Mommy I know how it is to need a caffeine boost for some of those sleepless nights. My baby girl will not sleep well if I have caffeine too late in the day. Also I have noticed now that some things that would bother her when she was smaller, do not affect her as much now. Her stomach must be growing tougher.

Anyways, I'm sure you know that this stage does not last long and the baby will be grown before we know it. So just enjoy breastfeeding while you can and congrats on your precious bundle!
