Busy Mommy and the Potty

My daughter is showing interest in the potty, she has been for awhile. She often tells me when she has to pee or poop and sometimes we make it to the potty and sometimes we don't but it is at this point that I want to train her. She is 17mos old, and some might argue its just too early, but she has been walking since 9months and she already knows her ABC's and is at the intelligence and motor skill level of a 2 1/2 or 3 year old - including being very tall for her age too. I know she is ready, that is not my question...
My problem is that I work A TON! like 60-70 hours a week and she staying with 3 different family members while I work. I ask them to try to help me but they don't so its up to me. I only have one day off each week and she is in bed usually when I get home.

Is there such a thing as potty train in one day? Have any of you mommies had success in training quickly? I don't think it is fair to NOT teach her when she is clearly ready.
Thanks

Hi J....

Do it!! Yes, it's possible - my daughter was fully potty trained well before she was two years old - it was awesome! (and like your daughter, mine was also walking at nine months) No more diapers...what a dream. I have her in the Montessori school in Palm Harbor and her teacher suggested it first. Since she's my first child, I have no prior experience and the teacher gave me a book to read - http://www.diaperfreebefore3.com/ - and we picked a date and just quit the diapers cold turkey. I bought some thick Gerber panties and just explained how she can't get those wet. For the first two days, we'd put her on the potty every hour...by the third day she was telling us she had to pee. The fourth day was a number two! It was finished in less that 6 days. We kept her in a diaper overnight for a couple months just in case, but only needed it a couple times. The other Moms are right - you need a solid 4 or 5 days with help from everyone - I couldn't have done it without the teachers help. Check out the Montessori School on Nebraska - they are wonderful!

Best of luck,
D.

If you have a week coming soon where you may have a couple days in a row you may want to start then. (I work 6 days a week too and will train my daughter in a couple weeks when I have a 4 day weekend.) After some successful time on the potty (whether it's one day or a couple) send your little one to the family member's houses in underwear. That will kind of force the issue with the family members. Also you may want to take the potty chair with you so she has the consistency of the same potty chair no matter where she is. I actually have 2 potty chairs. 2 Baby Bjorn chairs one big & one little travel one. You may want to get one of the travel ones. They are light and easy to carry, but have her use it at home so she is familiar with it. They are only $10 (more with shipping when you buy online. Free shipping when you spend $25 at Amazon which is where I bought mine but Babies R Us may have them) When she is ready it will happen fast. So if it is very difficult you may want to wait a bit longer and try again later. Below are some links to "potty train in a day" info. Good luck!!

Hi J.,
My kids were both around 2, with my son taking much longer! I think younger kids CAN be trained earlier and that there is a magic window...which seems to be now for your daughter. That said, the Baby Signs, Inc. has come out with a program/kit that you can use to help you potty train. You can check it out at www.babysigns.com. Mom's across the country are reporting amazing results. I haven't bought the kit yet, so I can't tell you first hand. Just wanted to let you know!

Hi there. No, it's not too early. As long as your little one can get to the toilet and get on it okay, than whenever she's ready. My daughter was very young, like your daughter, and I showed her once and she never went back. Some are like that.. quick learners. My son was the total opposite.

My girls are 11 & 13. The older one was trained at 20 months, and the younger one although had the example of her older sister was trained until almost 30 months. Every child is different, and you have to cease the day. It is hard to potty train with out the help of your childcare. Just like anything else, bottle pacifier, blanket, if they will not help you, your attempts may be in vain. Good Luck!

Hello Busy Mommy,
I have had six children(3 girls and 3 boys).I can honestly tell you that each child is different. I had one who trained in just a week who was out of diapers before he was 1. On the other hand I had another one who took almost till they were 3.
I think that your family members should support you more. You might start with sending a potty chair and training pants. Be sure that your daughter is telling them that she has to go ,it is my experience that sometimes children don't feel comfortable telling other people about certain things. Also try buying fruit snacks open the pack and give her a few after she has went potty children love to know that they have done well.

I have 3 grown sons, my oldest son was potty trained at 18 months. He was ready, which it sounds like your little girl is. I could not have done it without the help of his sitter. You need their help, or you must put her in day care, they will help. I know that sounds awful, but you have got to have help from the sitters. It is alot of trouble at first, but the rewards are worth it. No more stinky diapers!! I thought my younger 2 would train early also, but they were not ready and refused until almost 3. So if she's ready now is the time. Good luck!!! C. W
