So What Happened?

Thank you all for your advice. I used Dawn and boiled for about 20 mins. That took off all the hard stuff. Then I scrubbed with steel wool, didn't need all that much elbow grease. Saved the stainless steel pot. Next time, I'll try the dryer sheets as I'm curious(surely they'll be a next time!!).

Place a fabric softner sheet at the bottom of the pot with some water & let it sit over night. Then hand wash in the am.

Fill the pot about half full with water, then add a teaspoon of vegetable oil, and about a shot glass full of Dawn Dish Detergent. The bring the water to a boil, and let it continue to boil for about 10 minutes.

After the 10 minutes are up, dump the water and fill the pot with cold water. Once the pot cools, an SOS or Brillo pad should take the mess right off, without any hard scrubbing!

Try using oven cleaner and let it sit on there for a few hours. It should loosen up. You can also try soaking it overnight and using brillo pads on it.

Several things might work:

Soak it in soapy water. If not, then

Heat it, low heat, with the soapy water, slowly, to a boil. Use something long, and metal to edge the bottom a bit - it should come right off.

If not, then, chisel. :) I got to this stage.

You don't want to use high heat, you might ruin your pot.

Good Luck,
M.

Put water and baking soda (lots of baking soda)in the pan and put it back on the stove over medium heat. Let it warm up and start to soften, then you can take a plastic spoon or spatula to scrape it off. Easier than scrubbing!

My mother always boils it on the stove for a while with some baking soda. You can do it over and over again to get the different layers of burnt food. Hope that helps.

Good luck.

My mom just passed along to me "creative ways to use Bounce dryer sheets." I'm famous for burning food onto everything I touch and cook with, especially baking sheets. Put 1 bounce sheet in the pot (or whereever the "burn" is), fill w/ hot water and let it soak over night. Holy cow, does this work. I thought the email my mom sent was bogus info. A few weeks ago I burned my baking sheet beyond recognition and it was ready for baking sheet heaven, so I decided to try this methon before throwing it away. I came downstairs the next morning and everything was lifted and washed clean. I used it again last night. The breading from my turkey cutlets was laying on the surface of the water. Give it a try. Good luck. Also, bounce is AWESOME in your pocket or waistband with keeping bugs away.

Have you tried reheating the pan to a low temp then putting water in it and letting it sit to cool?

If you are looking for a product to purchase, Scour Off from Shaklee is a non-toxic cleaner. I use it on my stainless pots and pans, porcelin, earings, etc. They turn out beautiful. I am a distributor. My website is below if you want to check it out.

Put some water, dish soap, (just a couple of drops, or it will boil over, and you'll have a bigger mess!) and some baking soda, like a teaspoon in the pot. Bring it to a boil, boil for a minute or so, and then shut it off. Let the pot cool down, and then wash by hand. The black stuff will just flake off.

Hi C.,
Try soaking a dryer sheet in warm or hot water. This usually does the trick.

Sprinkle a powder dishwasher detergent on the pot (use alot, the more the better) and let it soak in hot water for an hour or so. It should come off with a sponge.

if it is a non stick surface you just have to soak it in soapy water and let it sit until you can wash it out. but if it is a hard working pot here are two products i would recommend.

1. dawn power dissolver: spray it on and let it sit for a while. you can find it at home depot because i notice some of hte grocery stores do not carry it.

2. bon ami or any dutch cleanser: after soaking and treatig it with the dawn, you should use this to scrub inside the pot.

some people use salt and just scrub out the inside (after the burned food has loosened up).

good luck! as a pot fanatic i can imagine how you feel if it is a favorite pot.

put baking soda in the bottom then pour vinegar over it and let it sit for an hour. you'll still need to use a scour pad, but it should work.

Hi C.,

There's this stuff called Dawn Power Dissolver that you can find in most supermarkets as well as in places like WalMart and Target, that works REALLY well for this kind of thing! It comes in a blue trigger-spray bottle. You spray it on the burnt on stuff with the pot dry, let it sit for a few minutes (depends on how burnt the pot is), and then scrub the pot out. Sometimes it works so well you don't even need a steel wool pad! Be careful, though -- the stuff is really strong and should not be used on non-stick cookware (it'll take the non-stick surface right off the pot too)! You might want to wear rubber gloves when you scrub the pot with the stuff in it, too. But this stuff is great -- I've gotten even really old burnt-on gunk out of my pans with it!

Good luck!

S. :)

I find that using a bit of dish soap and baking soda is great. Put a bit of both in the pot and scrub with a sponge to make a paste. If there are still stubborn spots I use baking soda, and a lemon half as a scrubber. GOOD LUCK!

Hi! I would put boiling water in the pot and a dryer sheet. Somehow the dryer sheet "pulls" off the gunk. Let it sit overnight. I've done this before and it worked for me. Good luck!

I put baking soda in a fairly thick layer all over the pan and then cover with a paper towel. Add enough water to wet the paper towel. Let it sit overnight (if it's really dry in your house be sure to add a bit more water so it won't dry out). Next morning, just wipe it out. There might be a speck or two of burnt stuff left but you can just wipe it off with the paper towel and baking soda.

The dryer sheet sounds interesting but dryer sheets are not something in my home since they are quite toxic.

Hi C.,

I shop from a company that has a great product for that. It works every time! The best thing is, it doesn't have the harsh chemical that other cleaners have. If you would like more information please feel free to contact me. I use it on my pots all the time.

put some water and soap in the burnt pot, and put it on the burner. Once the water boils, you can turn it down and leave it on the burner on med. This takes just about anything off.

Hi, take the pot and fill it with water and dish washing liquid and boil it. This will start to loosen the "black" burnt off of the pot. Afterwards, you can then scrub it.

Good Luck!!!!

Put some baking soda and water in the pot and bring to a boil, let it sit until cool enough to handle the water and it should scrub out pretty easily.

the best to clean is straight dawn detergent. It will take a little elbow grease, but i have been cleaning the gas stove remnants off of my pans since we got an electric stove, and it is really amazing what it does,

other suggestions are: oven cleaner is one way, then just wash it really good, a brillow pad works and the other way i use is boil vinegar in it.

This is going to sound crazy but it really works (you don't say what kind of pot.. this works on corningware type pans as well as stainless steel,, I wouldn't use it on nonstick stuff, though). DRYER SHEETS!!! The woman that told me about it I thought was crazy until I tried it. Put some water and the dryer sheet and let sit overnight. THe next day you should be able to get all the burnt stuff out. Might take some elbow grease but I've saved two pots this way.
