Burnt Oatmeal

About a month ago, the kids woke up before the both of us and made oatmeal in the microwave. They've done it a million times before, but this time they must've hit an extra zero and done 10 minutes instead of 1. Of course, they didn't notice until after it was burnt black, the bowl scorched beyond belief, and the house filled with smoke and the nasty smell of burnt oatmeal. We got the smell out of the house, but every time we use the microwave, you can still smell that oatmeal! Does anyone have an suggestions for how we can get rid of that nasty, burnt smell?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I cut a lemon in half, stuck it in a bowl with some water and cooked it for 5 minutes and let it sit. I think that did the trick! Thanks for all the ideas everyone!

I did something way worse when I was 12. I didn't know that you couldn't put a metal pot in the microwave! Well, I wanted to cook something...we had to get a new microwave after that.

Anyways, try a good ol' scrub with baking soda. Mix it with water to make a paste, and scrub it down. It kills a lot of smells everywhere. Baking soda is cheap, and I use it for everything including fridge smells. I also use baking soda for the kids' whites in the laundry, we're skin sensitive to bleach. It does get out their stinky sock smells!

My son did the same thing! (Only it was burnt pizza) The smell came out with lots of washing and time. I did wash the microwave out with bleach solution and that helped. It smelled like burnt pizza for quite a while though.

J.,

to get the smell out of the microwave, Peal 1 large potato and place it directly in the microwave. Leave it sit for about 4 hours, All of the smell should be gone, (this also works to get the smell out of any type of dishes, i.e. onions etc). If this doesn't work you can place in a glass bowl 1 cup vinegar and 1 cup water. boil for 5 min. in the microwave and let sit until cool.

Ack! I bet that was a mess!!! Try boiling some vinegar in the microwave using a small bowl. The vinegar smell will be strong at first, but once it dries the smell is gone.

Try vinegar. That's what our cleaner uses to clean our microwave, and it's a pretty strong smell sometimes.

Try filling a coffee mug with some lemon juice and water & nuke it til it boils. Let it boil in there a couple of minutes. Or leave a dish full of baking soda in there when you aren't using it--it might absorb the odor. I'd try something acidic like vinegar or lemon juice first tho. Good luck!!
