I was eating a salad today.
suddenly the roof of my mouth hurt and w/in seconds the skin got loose from my tongue and actually came off.
now of course it hurts.
The salad dressing had mustard and red wine vinegar in it.
I've had this before and assumed it was strawberries...
anyone lese have this? i'm guessing its a food allergy.
no other symptoms.

added: haven't cut the roof of my mouth lately. the piece was probably the size of my pinky fingernail

What can I do next?

My mouth blisters when I eat pineapple, cinnamon, and too much orange or lemon. I have to be careful also not to eat too much crunchy stuff like croutons, crackers, chrispy flake cereals, and toast, or my mouth gets sore and the skin peels off. The biggest problem tho is with pineapple a day or so later,,, it blisters on the way out also,,if you get my drift. I wasnt always like this, so as we age, things can change, so dont assume you had things before and can still have them. It might not be true anylonger. And a really scary thought is, could there have been something in the salad that wasnt supposed to be there? Like glass, or a sliver of metal? Stuff can happen in a kitchen, and food plant, and you never know.

Sounds like a chemical burn (common from eggplant and taro, and some acidic or base foods), or an allergiic reaction.

Go take a benedryl just to be safe. The last thing you need is blisters and sloughing in the rest of your digestive tract. Easy way to pick up an ulcer or infection.

The antihistamine (diphenhydramine) won't hurt you if it's not an allergic reaction, but it can stop some rather nasty things from happening if it is. If you don't have benedryl on hand, it's also the key ingredient in Tylenol PM and most OTC sleep aids. Check the active ingredient list for diphenhydramine.

you might be allergic to vinegar...could've had too much vinegar in it.

I would go to an ENT and get allergy tests ran. I would call them Monday AM and get an appointment.

Had you been eating anything really rough in the previous days, like Fruit Loops or croutons? That will really tear up the roof of your mouth, and then the roughed up skin might have just happened to come loose while eating the salad.

You didn't mention how large a piece of skin it was. It might make it a little clearer.

What Riley said. You may want to find out what was in it so you don't have it happen again. I have an allergy to cinnamon, thankfully mild so as long as I don't go crazy with the red hots I am fine.

My uncle is allergic to vinegar. Might be worth paying attention to.

The last time that happened to me, I also wondered - how did that happen because, like you said it was just like when you burn the roof of your mouth, except I'd not eaten anything hot. It was right behind a back tooth. My tongue kept feeling the area and 1.5 days later, I had a canker sore. So I wondered if that is just the way canker sores start and we don't usually notice? I don't know.

I also had such a messed up mouth when I caught the coxsackie virus from my baby! Adults are usually already immune and are not supposed to get it! It is so minor in babies... but NOT so when an adult gets it!

And lastly, as another poster said - I react to some foods and chemicals. Some of the reactions are in my throat, some in my mouth, some in my intestines, some erupt out on my skin, some anaphylactic, some affect my joints (called allergic arthritis--at least that's what they said in the E.R.), and ... pineapple causes a reaction in my mouth.
