Bunk Bed for a Five Year Old?

We're thinking about moving our son to a bunk bed. His room is small, so we're looking at those that have only one bed and room to play underneath it.

He hasn't fallen out of bed for a long time, and with the rails around i'm not worried about him falling out while sleeping, but I am worried about him waking up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom and forgetting that he's up high. What age have moms out there let their kids have a bunk bed?

Also, has anyone tried one of the bunk beds with the slides? How did their child like those?

No, please don't. My best friend throughout highschool lost her son to an accident when he fell off the top bunk. He was not jumping or playing rough. He just fell off and cracked his head on something, maybe the lower bunk or the floor. But he died, he was in elementary school. Please don't. They are not safe for little kids who just have no idea about the dangers.

We just purchased a bunk bed for out 4 year old. The neat part about it is that it's shorter than a standard bunk (the bottom bunk is basicly on the floor like a platform bed but we'll be using it for out youngest soon so it'll be nice) so I'm way less worried about her falling out of the bed in the middle of the night. It does have the slide and I think my DD with love it. We got ours at a store located in Columbus, OH. I think they do shipping if you're interested in checking out what they have or just to get idea you can visit their web-site. http://www.bunkloft.com/index.html They do just lofts as well if you didn't want the bottom bunk at all.

We had them custom make a full over full bunk with the slide and I can't wait to get it!! We'll be picking it up in two weeks. It's a little family owned business and are so easy to work with. Oh, and when the kids are done with the bunk we'll be able to unstack them and they'll have to nice full sized beds.

Oh, and I just want to put on a disclaimer that I am in no way affiliated with this store I just love their products and can't wait to get out bed! We searched for a VERY LONG time for the perfect bunk and this place had stuff we've never seen before.

My son has had a bunk bed since he was about 4. One thing I will give you a heads up on (because your son's room is smaller like my son's) is to see about placement as it relates to light fixtures/ceiling fans. Because my son's room is small... no matter WHERE we put the bunk bed, he could reach out and touch the ceiling fan. So we had to take it down (the ceiling fan, not the bed). It was something that never occurred to me until we already had it up. Otherwise, he's never fallen down the ladder in the middle of the night. And he gets up often enough that if it were gonna happen, it would have already.

My 4yo had a bunkbed for about a year (we moved, his room now has a dormered ceiling). He had absolutely no problem managing the ladder to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night. I figured it might be a problem, but he was great with it. The only time he used the ladder was at night, however. In the daytime he did flying leaps.

All bunks have sides. I believe its' illegal to sell them without.
My girls got them when my oldest was 5. She was one top, little sis was on the bottom. Never an issue.
The little guy got his when he was 3ish. We got him a loft bed with the desk and toy shelf underneath. He has never had any problems. Now at 10 he no longer uses the ladder and jumps from the bed to the floor, sometimes putting pillows across the room to see if he can land on them.

I hate them only because I cant' make them.

OH duh!!! I just reread your question and it says slides not sides. I'm sorry. Mine would have loved one of those.

Sometime ago there was a group trying to outlaw bunk beds due to the number of accidents and deaths. Guess it didn't go over well. I have heard of accidents and deaths and yet we had them with our boys at different times. I would not advise them though. We had them for our first two boys and they were about 3 and 4 when they were in them first. It was a nightmare with two in them as they played, wouldn't sleep and climbed on them all the time. The ladder was not attached and I really thought not a good idea. We put them down and used them as twin beds for sometime after that. Then later we put those same two boys in a very sturdy set and they were older so it worked fine but as for little children I think it should be very sturdy, ladder attached all the way around and even then they can fall. If there is any other way to do it please don't get bunk beds. What about a captains bed with drawers under it for storage or clothes?

Hi S.,
we have the green army one from Nebraska Furniture Mart. It started out as my son's, but now it's my bonus daughters. She is 14 and only here ever other weekend. When she's not here, my youngest daughter who is 4, loves sleeping in her big sister's bed. She has never fallen out, remembers to climb down the stairs if she wakes in the middle of the night. This bed does have the slide but I have taken it off since moving it to my bonus daughters room. She didn't want it on anymore. I wouldn't get the bright colored one from NFM because the slide comes off the bed at an angle and it just takes up too much room. Or you are limited in where it can be placed. My sister had that problem.

Mine got his loft bed at five and a half. I was very nervous, he often gets up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom but he has been fine. Is your son good at climbing? Does he seem pretty wide awake when he gets up to use the bathroom? We also had the fan issue but just told him to leave it alone

We have a low loft bed with a slide and play space under(they r tons of fun). Our oldest got it when he was 3 .It's only 33 inches off the ground. he is 6 now, and i still think he is not ready for a real bunk bed.
