Bumps on Her Head

I just noticed yesterday that my daughter, 1 year old, has 2 large-pea sized bumps on her head. There is one on either side of her head. The one on the right is at the base of her skull and the one on the left is behind her ear. These are rounded hard bumps under the skin. They don't seem to be bothering her and don't hurt when I touch them.

I am going to try and get in with the dr tomorrow, but I was wondering if anyone had had similar issues. ??? I'm so worried!!!!!

What can I do next?

Sounds like slightly swollen lymph nodes. It is always a good idea to get them checked out, but I am sure there is no problem. My son has one that seems like it is always enlarged. The doc isn't concered at all. Lymph nodes often swell when someone gets sick or is fighting off an infection (no matter how slight). You may not even notice her being sick if it is just a tiny cold virus or something - but those lymph nodes being swollen is a good thing. It means her body is doing what it should be to keep her healthy. They can also stay enlarged for several months, especially in kids who are alwyas meeting new germs - so don't worry if they don't shrink anytime soon.

They are lymph nodes and we all have them. I thought there was something wrong with my son when I found them so I asked his ped. at his 9 month visit. He said they are normal and sometimes they are a little more swallon than other times. Rest assure he is fine :).

Well, I should have checked Mamasource first! I JUST got back from the urgent care because my little girly (18 months) has a bump at the base of her skull. (I was already writing her eulogy! You know, I'd convinced my self it was a tumor.) Sure enough...swollen lymph node. BTW, the doctor says it could take up to a month to resolve.

Thanks moms!

I am not a medical professional but I had a bump on the base of my skull that matches what you are describing, so to hopefully put your mind at ease until you are able to have her seen, I wanted to let you know my doctor told me mine was an enlarged lymph node. She didn't know why it was enlarged. She gave me some medicine, but I don't remember what it was. It did go away, but the weird thing was that it just so happened to coincide with a head lice infestation we were having thanks to a photo session in my daughter's preschool that included dress up hats. You can imagine how long it took everyone in that daycare to get rid of the lice. Like I said, it could have been a coincidence, but once the lice were gone, the bump was gone too.

Obviously, this may NOT be what your daughter is experiencing, but it could be that simple. A couple of swollen lymph nodes. Try not to worry too much. I know that's like asking you not to breathe, but try to assume it's nothing big so you can at least get some rest. :-)

Blessings,
N.
