Where is the bumper pad suppose to sit, on top of the nattress, or half way on the mattress? My mother tells me it is suppose to be half way down the mattress, I half it sitting it on the mattress. She also says that (heydy, my son) could get his fingers cought under the bumper pad if I leave it sitting on the top of the mattress. I say what it I put it half way on the matress, and he gets his fingers stuck under the bumper pad?

What can I do next?

You should put it halfway down the mattress. My dtr got her whole head under hers (don't ask me how) and when I told my mom, that's when I found out I was supposed to put the bumper halfway down the mattress. Hope this helps!

A.,
I always put the bumper pad on the mattress, not tucked around the sides. Crib bumpers actually have nothing to do with crib deaths, so don't be concerned about using one. Do put a fan in the baby's room whenever they are sleeping- this keeps the air circulating, because crib deaths are actually caused by fumes given off from the flame retardant on the mattress and a fungal growth. There is a very good book from New Zealand "The Cot Death- Cover Up?" by Dr. Jim Sprott. He developed a mattress cover that eliminated crib deaths in New Zealand for people who followed his suggestions. Also never use detergents and fabric softeners on baby's laundry- they leave behind a nitrogen film. Only use natural soap products. Contact me if you want any more info.
Best Wishes,
M.

A. i had 3 kids and each child the bumper pad sat ontop of the mattress, its more for decoration, if they are gonna get their little fingers pinched, they will do it like you said with it up or between , ive never heard of it between, nothing beats a child with a watchful eye from its parents, ive never had any problems, with mine sitting on top of mattress, so have fun and dont sweat it, D. s

Hi A.
When my 6 and 4 year old were in a crib I always had the bumper pad resting so it was slightly tucked in around the mattress, but not as far as half way down.
I do know though that bumper pads are now considered unsafe in a crib because of the suffocation hazard. It is recommended that baby sleeps in the crib with nothing around him/her (no bumpers, cuddly toys, pillows, loose blankets etc).
I know you can get the breathable ones though that are like a mesh. I had bumpers because I worried about their little arms or legs getting trapped in the bars which is why I tucked in a little.

According to dr.'s and nurses today, you aren't even supposed to put the bumper pad in the crib. It is a suffocation hazard!

On top. There is now way I could even fit the crib mattress down half way with the bumper one, it wouldn't fit.

take the bumper back and exchange it for some other cute decoration for the room. they are unnecessary, and while many will tell you they used them and they were fine, they are not recommended these days due to safety concerns. if your child rolls into the side of the crib, it is not life threatening, and prob will never happen anyway. i did not use a bumper, and never had any problems with this. she also did not get her limbs stuck between the slats of the crib. it is also recommended that you remove the bumper after 6 months, so it's main use is decoration. so, why not exchange it for something that can decorate the room longer, like a rug, lamp, or switchplate cover?

For my son, I always had it on top and the strings tied to the bed. We had no problems.

We tuck ours in just a bit so that it reduces the chance of the pacifier falling onto the floor. Again. and Again.

I always had it sitting on top of the mattress. I've never heard of setting it below the top of the mattress before. I can tell you, that with both of my daughters, I never had a problem with them getting their fingers stuck under the bumper pad. I would be more afraid of them getting their fingers stuck between the mattress and bumper pad with the set up that your mom is suggesting.

you shouldn't use bumper pads because it increases the risk of SIDS. If you do use them they are supposed to sit at the mattress not part way on the mattress.

Regular bumper pads are not very safe, and can be a suffocation hazard. The ones I use are called breathable bumper pads.. You can get them in different colors at Babies R Us and/or online at different retailers .
Name: BreathableBaby Breathable Mesh Bumper Pads
And I tuck mine a little into the mattress. I mainly use them so that my daughter's chubby arms and legs don't get stuck :)

I used bumper pads with all four of my children. I placed on top of the mattress. HOWEVER, bumper pads are not recommended for infants. Check with your pediatrician.
