Bumper Pad Alternatives?

I have no idea what category my question falls under. I have a 7.5 month old son. We have the breathable bumper pads on his crib. But, now that he is moving around more, he kicks his feet and plays in his crib and he is kicking the velcro loose. I'm worried that if he continues to do that he'll end up unthreading the bumper and he could strangle/suffocate himself (paranoid? Yes!).

But, just now I heard him crying and I went in and he had kicked the bumper pad down and got both of his legs stuck in the railings. It was actually quite hard to get his legs out. I had to twist his foot to get one leg out and the other one was really stuck in there. So, I'm afraid to NOT have the bumper pad on (for all the good its obviously doing). Plus, I'm worried about him getting body parts stuck in the gaps between the end of the mattress and the railing.

Any suggestions? What have y'all done?

What can I do next?

Try weaving the mesh bumper in and out of the slats. It may help reinforce the ends so they are not as easy to pull off. I have always used the regular bumper pad, although I have considered the mesh kind. My son is 18 months now and I still use the bumper pad. I tried taking it off a few times but when I did, I would go check on him at night and he had stuck both legs through the slats. I always ended up putting it back on. Another alternative may be to stitch on some little ties at the same place as the velcro that way if it does come loose, it will still be tied on.

Best of luck to you!

I'm conserned that your matteress may not fit your crib. How old is your crib? Take a 12oz soda can and try to pass it through the railing. If it can go through, it is not safe. Also you should not be able to pass more then two fingers between the crib and the matterss. If this chacks out then I would take him out of the crib all together and have him sleep in a pack and play. If he has found a way to get twisted with his legs, it could be worse next time. It isn't as cute, but it is much safer.

Hi Nedra. I have the breathable bumper on my baby's bed. I also had a similar thing occur where my daughter was sleeping with her leg up on the railing and at some point in slid between the two rails and she starting crying because her little ankle was caught. I removed it and she rolled over and went back to sleep. I have only experienced this one incident. I have the velcro on the outside to prevent it from coming off. I also bought additional velco and sewed it onto the bumper to extend the current velco portion. This helped a lot. I also weave it in and out every few slats to help keep it in place. Over time (about every two weeks or so) it slides down a bit and I just pull it up in place.

I actually tuck the bumper pad in between the matress and the railing a little bit and it keeps my kids from kicking or pulling it loose. Hope that helps.

What Melissa said, or you could hang the bumper on the outside of the crib vs the inside
