We had both, the quilted bumper that came with the crib bedding set and the breathable bumper that I bought for safety. I put the breathable bumper on the inside, so it was the only one the baby came in contact with and it did it's job of being breathable if she smashed her face up against it in the night. I used the pretty, quilted bumper on the outside of the crib, just as decoration until she got big enough to start messing with the ties. My daughter is 19 months and we still have the breathable bumper on her crib because it acts as a binky barrier and helps keep her binkies in the crib where they are easy to find the next morning and it also acts as a visual barrier to prevent her from being tempted by the outlet (even though it has a safety cover on it) right at face level behind her crib. I also, just for an added precaution, tuck the bottom edge of the bumper in below the top edge of the crib mattress, to prevent any gaps. Good luck!
