Bulging Vein on 17 Mo. Old Face

Hello,
I have a concern about your 17 mo. old son. For a while, he had a little knot on his upper eyelid, right where the eyebrow starts. His skin is very pale, almost translucent, so I can see that the knot is dark in color. It was small and didn't seem to bother him at all. Yesterday, the knot grew bigger. This is not a gradual growth, but a sudden increase in size. It feels like there is a hard ball under his eyelid, and it is still dark in color. He does not appear bothered by it.

My babysitter thinks it is a bulgey vein, that will go back down by itself. My father-in-law, who I think is wrong, thinks it is mole. It is clearly NOT a mole.

Does anybody have any clue what this could be?

What can I do next?

hey H., sounds like a hemangioma (sp??), which is basically a bulging vein and subsequent growth. my daughter has the exact same thing in the same place as your son, it was there from shortly after birth, and when she's overly tired or stressed it is bigger and darker. she's now almost 2 and it's gotten a lot smaller since birth- rule of thumb is these things tend to go away by age 3. I'd make an appt with a pediatric opthamologist right away to be sure, esp to be sure it isn't infrigining upon his vision (these things can put pressure on the retina). if they won't see you right away call your pediatrician and explain what you wrote up there, that it appeared to grow overnight and is dark in color.
it sounds to me like a totally normal hemangioma, but you'll want to see a doctor to be sure.

Hi H.,
If the knot has changed so drastically over night, you need to take him in to see his pediatrician. You don't want to wait until it's too late. it could be anything - or nothing. Again you don't want to wait and "see" how things turn out. You need to take him in to your Pediatrician and get him checked out. If it is a vein and there is nothing to worry about your child's doctor would be the best judge of that. If it's too late to see a doctor right now or today, and the knot is still growing or changing in color, you need to take him to the ER or an UC near you.
I hope everything is okay!

Definitely go to the doctor ASAP. Anything that changes that quickly without being caused by a known injury can be serious, and it is best to get it checked out right away. It is probably nothing, but you want to be sure. Good luck!

I would definitely see the pediatrician. Most of the time, you know if something is abnormal in your child, and judging by the level of concern in your question, you need to take this to a doctor. If it's something that needs treatment, he or she can diagnose that. If it's harmless, you can breather easier.
