Brushing Teeth of 14 Month Old - How Long Do You Brush?

My daughter is not a fan of brushing. We do it after every meal, but she blocks the brush with her tongue, etc. I try to make a game out of it, brush my teeth at the same time, sing songs about the food we're brushing away, you name it. I don't want it to be a power struggle, or traumatic, but I also want her to develop good habits starting now. Does anyone have any tips for making this easier? And also, how long are you supposed to brush a toddler's teeth? Thanks!

What can I do next?

my son is 13 months we have been brushing for him since 4 months around 10 months it became a battle finally at 12 months i stopped doing at the table like we had been doing. i let him get down and run for a minute and then i ask him to follow me to the bathroom once we started in the bathroom he would sit and chew on it while i watched once in a while i would take over and give them a scrub and let him go back to it on his own. He follows me to the bathroom first thing in the morning and fusses until i give him the brush. once he had the change of scenery he was good to go.

Hi! I'm a dental hygienist and they all gave good tips on how to get your daughter to like brushing her teeth. There is no 'set' time to brush for but just make sure you are getting all surfaces of each tooth. People don't always realize that you are trying to remove plaque from your teeth and it accumulates on all surfaces, such as your chewing surface, cheek side, and tongue side of each tooth! If you brush like you are trying to clean the gums by angling the bristles toward the gums you will do a much more effecient job while you are in there. It is recommende for adults to brush for 2 minutes, or for older kids I tell them to sing thru the ABC's twice and that's a good amount. Parents really should brush their kids teeth until they are atleast 5 yrs old, let them brush first then you go around to make sure no spots are missed. Sorry I'm writing a lot but I like to share what I know, especially if it works. :) My own 2 yr old son fights getting his teeth brushed but do what you can atleast 2x/a day and hopefully the tips will help.

We let our son chew on it while changing as well. We usually take it and actually brush for about a minute and he is ususally OK with it. have you trie dteh non-fluoride toothpaste? It has a berry taste and he loves the flavor. I think that helps too.

When my son was about 16 months i just gave him a toothbrush and had him stand on a stool in the bathroom and mess around with the toothbrush. Then I'd try to sneak in a quick once over on his teeth. I kept a CD player in the bathroom and played goofy songs and made it fun. We didn't really start a thorough brushing until he was about 18 months or so. Rollefson, Trochlell & Assoc. does a free well baby check on 18 months and younger. They just make sure the teeth are growing in right and could give you tips. They also have tips on their website, www.thefunkidsdentist.com. Good luck!
