We began brushing my son's teeth at about this age. We use Waleda Baby Toothpaste (make sure if you use toothpaste, that it's fluoride-free), and Toms of Maine makes a nice one, too. We did it every night, and made up a little song to go with it. I don't know that it is necessary, but brushing the gums can help make teething a little easier, and we've had wonderful luck because brushing teeth is something our son accepts and expects each night, and now he really enjoys it. After we brush his teeth, we let him brush his own teeth (he's now 16 months), and he loves loves loves it. Whenever he sees us brushing our teeth, now, he asks if he can brush his, too.

I didn't brush our son's teeth all the time at that age but I tried to do it as much as possible... MOSTLY to get him use to brushing his teeth so it wouldn't be such a huge fight when he got older. But it is probably a good idea to brush them at least occasionally to get milk off... and definitely if he is beginning to eat solids.

My son has 5 teeth (almost 6) and I brush his ... well ... whever I think about it that it. Probably not as often as I should. But they have the little kits with a toothpaste (more like a gel) for babies and it comes with something to put on your finger and you use that. I would be careful though once he/she gets more teeth because my son likes to bite and even with that cover on your finger it hurts!! ;-)

Yes. They make those great Orajel baby finger cot brushes. You do not even need to use a toothpaste of any kind. It starts a good pattern of behavior and my kids liked the way it felt on their teething gums.

You could but make sure you use a baby tooth brush because it is softer. I just used a wash cloth for my kids, until they were about a year. I would make it nice and wet and they would suck on it while I quickly "brushed".

You can just use a washcloth dampened with water and wrapped around your finger. Or O. of those little fingertip brushes.
