Could be anything... cavities, dead nerve or staining from food or even kids' toothpaste. Also possible causes are staining cause by too much fluoride or certain antibiotics. Take him in and get it looked at...
HI all! So my son is 21/2 and I was looking at his back moller and noticed one of them was brown....Im so nervous...is it a cavity?? I plan on taking him to a dentist...what will they do? I admit I wasn't the best at making sure his teeth were brushed every night up till recently I would say at 2 I started making sure it was a routine every night...now we are starting every morning routine...I feel like such a bad mom!!!! He NEVER drinks pop...never has...he only gets juice once a day...rarely gets candy and sweets...even fruit snacks are limited to 1 pack a day...I thought I was doing pretty good. What can I expect when I take him to the dentist..he is super excited about it but what will they do for a 2 year old? Thanks for any advice you can give me!!! Thanks

It could be a cavity or it could be that he knocked his tooth and the root died. My son bonked his two front teeth and they both turned brown. Our dentist said that it's normal and there's not much that can be done about it (since they fall out anyway). Also, if he does have a cavity it's really not a big deal. They don't usually use Novocaine on children that young and getting a cavity filled is pretty easy and painless. I wouldn't worry about it.
My niece had a brown baby tooth too. My sister was concerned and took her to the dentist. Turned out it was like a birthmark on her tooth. When she lost the baby tooth and the new tooth came in there was no more brown, just as the dentist reassured my sister it would. I'd still go see the dentist but I wanted to let you know there are teeth birthmarks as odd as it may sound.
It could also be calcium deposit... sometimes this happens in baby teeth.. Nothing you can do but wait for his adult tooth and be thankful its not a front tooth! DONT feel like a bad Mommy... you sound like a wonderful Mommy!! =)
This happened to one of my twins bottom teeth. I took him to a dentist and they swore it was from drinking milk at night, but I could tell the enamel was not damaged. So I took him to a nutritionist and it was a mineral dificiency. They gave me some drops to put in his milk and the teeth turned white in a few days!! If you want to write me offline I can give you his info. I was very amazed at the results!
First visit should be a fun visit (Just talking to the dentist, letting him look in his mouth etc) the dentist shouldn't do anywork (unless emergency) on their first visit so not to make them afraid of the dentist. They will probably just look at it, and decide what needs to be done, then make an appointment to get that done. That way they don't freak him out about the dentist by going right in on the first time.
Defintely want to get that checked but it may not be a cavity at all. Onoe of my girls had a purplish brown tooth. I was told it could be that the nerve was affected when the tooth was growing or she could have been sick when the tooth was forming. My other daughter has slightly discolored teeth and the dentist told me they are fine. She may have had a bad fever or illness while they were forming. We may not be able to whiten them later if that is what she decides she wants.
From my experiance as a other of 3 boys they usually don't take a child until they are at least pre-school to kindergaten age but if your child has that bad of a problem they may do an exray to see if the tooth is decayed and then if it is they will most likely put some numbing medicine on his tooth them work on it to fill it. I wouldn't worry too much. Just let your so know that you will be by his side if he is nervous going to the dentist and everything will be just fine.
