Hi ladies!! How do you keep brown sugar from turning into a ROCK? I know Paula Deen once said on her show, but I didn't write it down and now I can't remember. I hate throwing it out after I have just used a little but it's impossible to work with once it hardens! thanks!

What can I do next?

I got these little terra cotta "brown sugar keepers" from one of those fundraiser catalog sales from my daughter's school. Here are some like it:

You just soak them and put them in an airtight container with the brown sugar. The sugar around the terra cotta will get white and hard, but the rest of it stays fluffy and soft!

Good luck!

Sugar is great food for bacteria, etc. As a result I personally would not cross contaminate by adding other food items into it for storage.

I choose to make it fresh when I need it.
Here is how - it is SO easy.
1 cup of granulated sugar (I prefer organic)
mixed with
1/2 cup of Molasses (I prefer unsulphured)

It is easy to clean up when it spills.
I keep the molasses in the fridge.

I use the brown sugar bear from Bed, Bath, & Beyond. You just have to wet it under water every few months to keep it moisturized.

I put mine in tupperware (no off brand works) and it does not get hard. If you do not want to invest in that, I have heard that placing a slice of bread in container will work. The bread supposedly absorbs the moisture.
