I am sad to report that my 2 and 1/2 year old has fractured her Femer Bone. She Recieved that new Ride and learn cycle for christams, and upon hooking it up behind the T.v. It left cords under the television. Well her being curios the next day she pulled the television down right on her leg. My older daughter was there to decribe the whole thing. Dad was on the second level of the house when this happen. My question is. She is now in a Spica cast and they say that it will have to be on at least 5 weeks. Any advice on keeping her from urinating on herself? And will she be able to resume normal activity after the cast is off? Also any words of encouragement!!! I am really bummed out about this.

So What Happened?

I would recommend every person strap down and secure all T.V. Remember these units use to be a piece of furniture and now they are lose items and BIG. She is doing well, and great. thanks for all the advice.

hey, oh gosh, sorry about that! But my cousins kid just went through the same thing aftera shopping cart accident!! Hers is off now, so i can tell ya stuff. I guess during that time, they kept her lying down, or would sit her on their laps...as far as i know the dr said to put her in pull ups. (She had just started with no wettings) During the time, sometimes they had the cast changed cuz it still got wet. She had bad skin under there. We saw her at christmas time, and she was walking like a penguin...I dont know why the dr didnt want to do therapy, but the mom said she does leg excersise with her. good luck!

L., I've heard about that type of cast and I sympathize. Just get through each day the best that you can and it'll all be over and you'll be laughing about it for years to come. My son had a severe spiral fracture to the femur when he was in 3rd grade (2 yrs. ago). It ran the entire length of his thigh. He had to be bed-ridden in traction for 24 days and then in a full-leg cast for 24 for more days. I lived (literally) at the hospital--double room--with him. I was miserable, but not as miserable as he was. Can you imagine a 8 year old boy in bed for 24 days!!!????!!! Luckily your child probably won't remember most of it. Good luck sweetie! K. S.

Hi L. -

I'm sorry to hear about your predicament. It's gotta be hard on you. I agree with Dana, if she isn't potty trained you can put her in Pull-Ups to keep her from urinating on herself. If she is potty trained I'd try taking her into the bathroom on a schedule of every hour or so to avoid her urinating on her cast. If she does get the cast wet it will start to fall apart and smell something awful. (I've had my fair share of wet casts...) As for resuming normal activities after the cast is off I wouldn't be suprised if she needs some physical therapy to strengthen the muscles back up. You may be able to do it at home, though. Your doctor will be able to guide you where this is concerned. Any which way, you'll make it through. You'll be suprised at just how resilient kids can be. Good luck - S.

So sorry to hear that your dear child has broken her leg. My brother also broke his Femer bone when he was 2.5! He was in a full body cast with a cut-out on the bum for diapering. My parents got a ride-on so he would still be mobile.

First off I would like to say I am truly sorry for you and your family. My prayers go out to all of you. My son when he was the same age pulled the television onto his foot. Thankfully he did not break anything, but I can't imagine what all of you are going through. Hang in there! Things will be better soon. If she is potty trained I don't know what advice I can give you, but if she is not potty trained then there is always pull-ups. Talk to her doctor to see what she can do after the cast is taken off. I wish all of you the best and keep your head up. Try and do fun things with her to keep her happy and not bored. Take care!!
