My daughter had bright green stool yesterday and today. I havent seen that from her so I am a little concerned. Should I be? Has anyone had any experiences with this and their toddlers? Any advise would help. Thanks

What can I do next?

Hi V. - I see you have gotten quite a bit of advice but I just had to add mine. The bright green poopie thing happens with both my boys too.

Here is a link that describes what it could be from my boy's pediatrician.

http://www.askdrsears.com/faq/ci26.asp

With my boys it happens from time to time and its always too much of something, usually milk and cereal (dairy). They love it and when I let them have more then one bowl a day with one or more glasses of milk here comes the green poopies! So I cut back on all dairy and the next time its back to normal, every time. This website has TONS of answers to all kinds of questions and it really has a way to calm the nerves :)

Hi V.,

That happened to my son for the first time this year--it happened on two different occasions. It really freaked me out the first time--I looked online and food coloring appeared to be the culprit. After I thought about it, both times happened when he'd had a store-bought cupcake with blue and/or black frosting (birthday parties). Apparently, it's not harmful (although it does make one think about letting kids consume too many processed foods)! Online moms said that Koolaid (food coloring again) would do it too.

okay. Has she eaten brightly colored cereal that has heavy doses of food coloring in it? Fruity cherios and one of the generic brand fruitloops will do it to ya! They have done it to my kids. Good luck.

Hi V.,
She must have eaten sg that turned her poop bright green.
My son had a Diego bday cake with bright green icing. Sure enough he had the same color poop the next day. Pretty freaky, but harmless. :-)

Hi V., most of the time the color of a bay/child's stool has to do with what hey ate, for example my 5 1/2 old in my daycare, every time she eats carrots her stools are green with streaks of orange. At this point I would not worry, but if you need peace of mind then just call her ped, he/she will probably tell you it has to do with something she ate. J. L.

Most likely it is something she ate. All three of my kids have greenish stool after they eat those gummi snacks. Very odd since none of them are really green, but that is what you get in return for eating the snacks. =} I was also told to only worry about the white, black, or red stool.

Once my son had poop that was bright blue from the frosting on a birthday cake! If it's super bright, it's likely food coloring.
Who knew poop could generate so much interest, huh? =)

My third son had a bright green poop once after drinking the grape-flavored Pedialyte (purple colored!) when he had a tummy bug. Chances are it is a one-time thing and nothing to worry about. I'd try to think about whether or not she's been eating anything different or if her digestion is a bit off.

Did she eat anything with food coloring? This would cause it to be green, passing through the system too quickly. Otherwise I would suggest that it is bacteria.

Has she been on antibiotics? Add a probiotic which are located in the refrigerator section (or at least the good ones) at Henry's, Sprouts, Whole Foods, Mothers.

I'm sure it's just something she ate. My daughter had the most colorful stool after eating Lucky Charms or colored yogurt. It freaked us out the first time it happened but, when we realized what she had eaten during the day we had a little laugh about it.

Could she have eaten a crayon or something like that? If she is not sick don't worry too much.

Like all other posts mentioned it is probably something she drank/ate. When my kids drink a certain gatorade when they are sick it turns green. L.

Hi V.,

No worries, this is normal and you'll see it more often I'm sure. Like Julie said, a lot of times the color has to do with what they ate. A while back our Pedi said that you should worry if their stool is white, black, or red.

Hi V.! My son experienced this same issue after eating fruit snacks. It happened with fruit roll-ups and the snacks. This was the only thing I found that justified the occurrance. Hope this helps and that it isn't anything serious. Take care

Has your daughter been sick? I know with my kids, when I gave them grape pedilyte(?) it would always change the stool to funky green.

My son just had that this weekend. The Dr. told me everything was fine, it was just because the food went through his system to quickly and was not properly digested.

My DD poop turns bright green every time we give her motrin. The doctor said it is from an additive in the coloring of the medicine. We bought the dye free and haven't had the problem since. Must be something she ate.

Sometimes when my kids have had store-bought cupcakes with brightly colored frosting they end up with very green poop. It is bit freaky, but passes quickly.

Has she eaten any food containing artificial colors (especially blue)? I remember my son having one of those blue colored kid yogurts - can't remember the brand - and then having a green poop the next day. Not sure if this helps but thought I'd share.

My son ate some play doh a few weeks ago (just a really small ammount before I caught him doing it) and it turned his stool literally flourescent green - but get this, it was purple play doh! Maybe she "nibbled" on something like that.

It is so liberating to read the other posts...I thought my kid was the only one that ever had neon green poop!

Oooohhhh, the joys of motherhood. ;)

I saw that with my son when he was three. It happened two, maybe three times, separated by a couple of weeks. The color was pretty disturbing, but he seemed to feel fine, and it cleared up after a day or two, so I just chalked it up to something he ate. He hadn't been eating a lot of artificial colors on those days, so my theory after the last episode was dillweed, but it has never happened again (it's probably been a year), so I haven't had a chance to test it out. If your daughter doesn't seem to have any stomach complaints, it's probably nothing to worry about.

Did she have any of those brightly colored fruit snacks or bright colored candy? That is usually the culprit with my kids... ; )

Did she eat something new? Blueberries make bright green poop. So do green crayons-FYI!

That happened to my youngest sister when she had grape juice. Every time she had the dark grape juice she had colorful poops.

You've probably been bombarded with responses on this one but colorful cereal did it to my older two. I never let them have anything other than Cheerios for the longest time and then one day I got them Trix (or something along those lines) and WHOA! I was surprised to see the color change and it took me awhile to figure out what was going on. We stick to the less colorful cereals now :)
