I am trying to find out how to get to this trail before you get to I-40 and Wade Ave. There is this bridge that is for walking or biking. I rode behind the Whole Foods on Wade and cannot find the entrance to this trail. Does anyone know how to get to this trail and what the name of the park is?

What can I do next?

I haven't actually been on the overpass, but I think you access it by using the part of the greenway that goes through Meredith College.

This is a fun place to ride and walk. Beware, though. Lots of inclines make biking this trail difficult for small children. To get on the trail, you can go to the North Carolina Museum of Art. There is more than one entrance to the greenway here. When you turn left to enter the premises, you can then either turn right and park in the lot that is sort-of farther from the museum, or you can turn left and go down and around to museum parking (you will circumnavigate construction). Near both parking areas are entrances to the greenway (just look for the paved sidewalk / path), and usually there are other people tooling around, coming and going off these paths. It's a great trail b/c there's art outside at several points. From either entrance to the greenway, you will be fed onto the trail that leads to the overpass. If you follow the path to its terminus, you end up at Meredith College. At the edge of the campus on Hillsborough, the path ends at a gate and you have to turn around. Hope this helps. L.

The trail starts over at the Art Center off Blue Ridge. They have a long walking/running trail that goes back into the woods then brings you to that bridge. On the other side is Meredith College, though. The reason I say this is I was running it for one of the first times last year and was coming back towards the Art Center on the bridge when security started to lock a gate at the end of it! Apparently they lock it at night on the Art Center side to keep people from getting into Meredith from that way! She was going to lock it make me figure out my own way back to my car (across 440 - nice!)

You can get there via the walkway that winds through Meredith College's campus - just keep following it towards 40. Or, you can get there from the NC Museum of Art - they have a trail that leads off into the woods that takes you to the overpass. It's paved and hard to miss. It's a fun trail, too - lots of things in the woods to explore.

From Blue Ridge Road, turn into the driveway for the NC Museum of Art. Follow this road all the way to the back of the property. From there, you should be able to see the trail that will eventually take you over I-440. It's not a short trip, so be prepared to walk. I'm sure there are other ways to access this trail, but this is what I've used, so it's tried and true.

I believe the walk bridge you refer to is part of the NC Museum of Art campus. You can probably enter one end from the museum side ... not sure where the other end goes.

There is an access trail on the Meredith College campus (which I've never used), but another way is to go to the Art Museum on Blue Ridge Rd..
Park in the lot closest to the road (immediately on the right) and take the asphalt path "museum trail" that goes behind the big metal storage buildings. (right of the construction zone and amphitheater).

You will get to a lovely pasture with a big whirly-gig, sometimes horses, and usually bluebirds nesting in boxes along the fence. Follow the path and bear right, it will head down and up and through the woods and eventually you get to the fun, but LOUD bridge. Bikes, strollers, and/or scooters may be useful.
On the other hand, veering off (near the new metal shelter) onto the foot path that leads to the "Cloud chamber" is a mysterious and magical experience. Sit in the dark and let your eyes adjust and you will see tree silhouettes, clouds and sun projected on the floors and walls. Basically you are in a giant pin-hole camera.

My kids love this trail, especially running down the hill from the pasture area to the big rocks by the amphitheater. Then they jump around from rock to rock and have snack.

The NCSU Arboretum on Beryl Rd. is another free, fun, nearby place to frolic and explore.

Have fun!

Hi!
The greenway leads from the NC Museum of art, over 440 leading to Meredith College --- it's a great walk! Also, many of the Raleigh community centers have free "tot" playtimes in the mornings all winter long - free fun!
Good luck, happy trails!
