Breastpump Recommendations

As a lactation specialist, I'd like to recommend that you get an "electric" breast pump, for starters. The manual pumps and battery operated ones are okay, but not nearly as efficient.

The very best pumps are manufactured by "Medela". They've been in the industry for a long, long time.

Check out all the discount websites and you'll find some really good deals (Amazon.com, Overstock.com, Half.com, etc.).

Another suggestion is to rent a pump for 30 days and see how you like it. You can store quite a bit of breast milk during that time. And if you really like the pump you rent then you can go ahead and purchase that particular model.

I really like my Medela Advanced Pump in Style. It's on the pricey side but I have heard from lots of people that it is one of the few pumps that lasts more than a year with most lasting only 6 months (the motor, that is). You can get it from www.nursingmothersupplies.com for about $40 cheaper than other places. This is a good pump if you are working or have to be away from your babies during the day or for long periods of time. Also, that website has very good customer support and free shipping. The Medela. I've used other brands, that are not as expensive, but they're such a hassle. The pump will run you around $200 but it's is so worth it if you're planning on having your baby drink breast milk for awhile. It's such a great pump.

I used the medela pump in style for about 10 months and it did the job very well, but I wish I had the advanced, because the carrier was a bit bulky! Some of my colleagues had the advanced and found good deals on line (sorry I don't know where) and they could carry it in different bags I believe. congrats!

In the first 2 months I got alot of use of the Medela double breast pump(electric), but after that, a single hand pump has been all I have used. The Medela or Harmony hand pump is fine.

I recommend the Medela Freestyle. It is the model up from the Pump in Style. I bought it through my frined's lactation consultant and it cost just slightly more than the Pump in Style and had free shipping. If you buy it somewhere else, it was A LOT more. I have friends that use the Pump in Style and like it, but it is so big to carry around and you have to be near an outlet or, I think, it has a HUGE battery compartment. The freestyle fits in the pal of your hand and is rechargeable. I don't pump a lot, but I'm still glad I invested in the freestyle. Also, compared to the price of formula, it is CHEAP! ]

It's totally worth it to spend the money on a Medela Pump in Style breast pump. Don't waste time or money on anything cheap. It won't serve you! They are expensive though. I borrowed mine from a friend and just replaced the disposable parts. Try to seek out a slightly used one, get it "serviced" at a nursing specialty shop and replace sterile parts.

If you are pumping frequently, I really liked the Medela electric pump. It worked really well and I was able to double pump and fill up two bottles pretty quickly. If you are looking at a single hand pump for less frequent use, I liked the Avent pump, the silicon padding really worked well for me. Congratulations! (My two are spaced the same, it was crazy for a few months, now they are great friends and 2 and 4).
