Breastmilk on a Plane

My husband and I are going to Destin the first week in September. Our son will be 3 months old. I am exclusively giving him breastmilk. I pump and feed him from a bottle.

My question is how much pumped milk can I take on the plane? I would like to take at least 8 ounces...

Also, is there any problem with taking the pump on the plane? I do not want to check it and can possibly pump on the plane to give him some more if needed.

Thanks ladies!!

What can I do next?

NO liquids are allowed in carry on luggage unless they are in containers less than 3 ounces in size (and labled as such) and all the containers of liquid you are carrying fit into one quart sized sealable plastic bag. The only exceptions to this are medications nessesary for the health of the person traveling and juice and milk for a baby - but only if the baby is also traveling. You can check out the guidelines at the TSA website here: http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/prohibited/permitt...
Hope that answers your questions!

You can take several bottles with you, but you must declare them separately. You can also take your pump with you. I did not check mine either, but they inspected it like it was a bomb. I explained what it was and it was okay! I suppose you could pump on the plane, but I would think that it would be quite difficult to do so. Nursing would probably be the easier option. Good luck and have a great time in Destin! I love it there!

I took 6 8 oz bottles with me. I also took my pump. No problems at all, but I did get a not on a script from my kids pedi stating that I would have my pump and bottles of breastmilk. I gave that to them first prior to my bags going through and no questions were asked or funny looks given.

Have Fun!!!

Regarding carrying your pump on, I travel with mine often and find that if I lean over and tell the person scanning the carry ons before it goes through I get through security more quickly. Alos, effective August 4, 2007, it is my understanding that there will be no limitations to the amount of breast milk you can carry on, regardless of whether you have the child with you. As a working, breast feeding mother who travels a lot, that is a change that is long over due.

I am a working, traveling mother as well thank goodness the laws are changing!! Sarah S, thanks so much for posting that. I included a clip from TSA about carrying on breast milk. I've never had any issues carrying on my breast pump. Sometimes they look at if funny and other times it goes right through.

Have a great time on your vacation!!

From TSA web page: Starting August 4th, breast milk can be carried on regardless of whether or not your child is with you. Here is there statement:

"TSA is also modifying the rules associated with carrying breast milk through security checkpoints. Mothers flying with, and now without, their child will be permitted to bring breast milk in quantities greater than three ounces as long as it is declared for inspection at the security checkpoint.

Breast milk is in the same category as liquid medications. Now, a mother flying without her child will be able to bring breast milk through the checkpoint, provided it is declared prior to screening."

I had no problems taking 3 full 8 oz premixed formula bottles onto the airplane. I just had to declare them separately, and let them "inspect" them.

The pump can be a carry-on item. Just be prepared for quizzical looks from the security staff. When I took mine along on a business trip, they stopped and reversed the conveyor belt 3 times before a security person hollered down the line to ask me what it was. I tried not to yell as I answered "It's a breast pump," but he couldn't hear me. When he finally understood what I was saying he dropped it like a hot potato and hurried me on my way. :-)
