Do babies get protein from breastmilk? I'm assuming they do, but I figured y'all would be better informed.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks, ladies! My little guy is 9 months old and I was just concerned after looking at the protein values in the other foods he is eating. (cereal, fruits, and veggies) You have set my mind at ease.

Breastmilk is perfect. Kellymom.com (no relation to me) is an excellent source for info on nursing.

Breastmilk is complete nutrition. It even contains stem cells. It is so dense in nutrients that if you were to buy breastmilk from a milk back it would be about $5 AN OUNCE. It is considered the most perfect form of nutrition known to man.

Babies get everything they need from breastmilk. That's the beauty of it! It's perfectly tailored to each individual child. :)

Yep. And protein in breastmilk is easier to digest than any other kind of milk/formula out there. Make sure baby is completely draining one side first, to get the fatty hind-milk as well as the thin, sugary foremilk, for the best balance and the least colic/gassiness problems.

You have your answer but let me add that breastmilk has all the nutrients (sugars, proteins, calcium, probiotics, fats, other minerals) that your baby needs. In fact, antibodies are included, in fact TAILORED, for your baby. For example, if you get strep throat, your baby gets the antibodies for strep throat so he/she can fight off also getting it! :)

The adage "you are what you eat" will translate to "your baby is what you eat"! If you eat more foods with iron, your baby will get some extra iron.

It's just amazing!!

Absolutely! Breastmilk contains pretty much everything your baby needs to eat and drink for the first year of their life, except Vitamin D. Exclusively breastfed infants need to have a Vitamin D supplement equivalent to 400 I.U. per day. My pediatrician recommended Poly-Vi-Sol, which is a liquid vitamin given with a dropper. It's over the counter, no prescription needed. You can add it into a bottle, or just put it in their mouth. When they get a little older (6 months+) you can add it to their fruits or veggies.

Absolutely! There's nothing better than breast milk. It's the perfect food for a baby, as nature intended it. Including antibodies to protect from illness. The only thing you might talk to your doctor about is iron and vitamin D. I'm pretty sure it's at about 6 months when a mother's iron stores may run low.
