Breastmilk & Formula - Lake Dallas,TX

Okay moms, a few weeks back I asked a question about sleep positioning because my best friends Pedi told her never to allow her baby to sleep on her side and mine was okay with it. Here is the latest...my best friends Pedi told her absolutely NEVER to mix formula and breastmilk in a bottle and feed it to her baby. I nursed my first child for a year and towards the end, would mix in some forumula when my supply was slowing down due to my business travel. My son never had any issues. With my new baby - I had so many issues nursing (mastitis, thrush, etc) and then was in the hospital for emergency surgery - well my milk supply went down. At this point my daughter is breast-fed for three feedings and I pump during the day and she gets 3-4 bottles that have 50% formula and 50% breastmilk. This is working VERY well for us and my Pedi is fine with it. So again, I throw this question out to the group...is there something that I should worry about in mixing formula and breastmilk IN THE SAME BOTTLE? My friend did not tell me why her doc said no, only that it was a huge "no, no". Help moms!
Thanks
M.

That is very interesting?! I have never heard that. I used to do this with my kids and I did it when switched to whole milk too. The only reason I would think that it would be a problem if you didn't measure the formula right or maybe because formula has a shorter room temperature life than breast milk, but that wouldn't matter unless you were leaving it out? If your Pedi is fine with it and it is working for you then I would keep doing it and not worry what someone elses pedi said.

So your question made me wonder becuase I mix them sometimes for my 9 month old. I googled it & found this article which gave both viewpoints & I think the reason not to is b/c it would possibly diminish your milk supply if you are supplementing with formula.

If you are worried about it, why not try using the pumped milk by itself for a feeding or two and then pure formula for another feeding or two - rather than mixing them? Just a thought. I did that with my first, and it worked well. We did it all - some breastfed, some pumped bottles, and some formula bottles.

Hmmm... I think as long as you are mixing the formula correctly prior to mixing it with breastmilk it will be fine. I did this w/2 of my boys. I think they just worry about formula being measured & mixed & then added to breastmilk. My boys are 10 & 8, they seem to have survived. I agree w/the other poster it was more about lack of supply than nutrition. I think you are fine. Good luck!
