Breastfeeding Mama with Late Period, but Negative Pregnancy Tests

I am a little confused. Since my daughter was 2 months old (she is 6 1/2 months old now) my periods have been fairly regular (every 28-30 days). I breastfeed, however she is starting solid foods and sleeping through the night and so am not feeding as aggressivly as I had been. This month so far I am over a week late and have taken 3 tests so far all of wich have been negative. I am taking them first thing in the morning so I'd think if I was pregnant it would show positive, but they haven't. Has anyone else experienced this? Is this normal? I am not on any form of contraception at all. Now we aren't completely careless... we do use the rythym method... granted it isn't 100% but it worked smashingly until we decided to try for a baby in 2005. I take my vitamins, but that is all I take. I exercise occasionally, but not aggressivly. I am a SAHM and not terribly stressed... less lately than I have been in years to be honest. I am not ready for a second baby (would like to get 1st one out of diapers first ideally)... but would be happy none the less if that turned out to be the case... it just seems unlikely with 3 negative tests. It just seems odd to me that they've been regular for the better part of 5 months and I am feeding less now... and now my period is a week and a half or so late.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well as it turns out I am in fact pregnant AGAIN... whew... deep breaths... waiting for the shock to pass and reality to sink in... my poor husband... I keep asking if he is ok... and he says "I guess." with a glazed over expression... we had just decided not to have more when all this happened... but he's a great man and despite his understandable shock... is hoping for another girl.

L.,
It's so hard to wait..... but waiting it out to see if your period will start would be your best bet. Also, just keep paying attention to your body for any signs of being preg. At home preg tests commonly do not indicate pregnancy within the first couple weeks. The last one I took said that on the box. And... Just take a deep breath!! ;)
Best,
K.

I have a six month old daughter also. I just asked this question laST WEEK. I have only had one period since I gave birth to her. All I know is that people tell me it is fairly normal not to have a period while breastfeeding. I would wait a while and take another test if you haven't had a period in another month. Nice to meet someone with the same problem as me. What day was your daughter born. My was 9-29-06.

I was the same way when BF. A few months of regularity, and then my body's clock would be totally off! Give it 3-5 more days and take another test. I wouldn't worry quite yet :)

Are you on birth control pills? I remember my periods came on time while breastfeeding and then when my daughter started to breastfeed less and less, I think it messed up the regularity of my cycles. I would have a period every three weeks or every six weeks. My doctor said it was the birth control pills I was on, it was a low dosage (due to breastfeeding) and it has a tendency to not regulate periods too well.
