I have a (4) month old that in the last day or so has been playing instead of eating at the breast. He is exclusively breastfed and has never acted this way before. Could he be rejecting the breast or maybe teething?

What can I do next?

S.,
I have an almost 3 month old and I notice that sometimes our feeding sessions turn into a "mouthing only" session. At that point, I end the feeding. Of course, my son is above the scales on weight gain, so I don't have to worry about him not getting enough nutrition. If you are in a similar circumstance, I would suggest that you end the session and feed your son when he is hungry.
Best of luck!

is he sticking his tongue out too, like a lick instead of a suck? try to burp. it could also be thrush which makes it hard to latch on-is his tongue white? it could be teething, i had a 3 day strike with my son over teeth. if it's none of the above, don't worry, he will suck when he is hungry. also, 3 months is usually the growth-nurse-around-the-clock stage, so maybe it just seems like he is not sucking as much as last month in comparision.
keep up the good work mama

Hi S.,
Let me start by saying that I am no expert, just another nursing mother. I have three and have nursed them all. My first two until 18 mos. I am still going with my 13 month old. They all went through these stages where sometimes they did not seem that hungry and wanted to play. First of all your baby has had 4 mos to establish a good milk supply. All of the sucking has given you enough milk to satisfy him. Now it is easier to get what he needs. Less sucking easier milk flow. When he needs more milk he will start sucking more and playing less. I also found with all three of my kids that they went through periods of growing. During these periods of time they seemed hungry all of the time. When they were not growing as much they were not as hungry. Sometimes this lasted a week or two. I think if you stick with it you will find that everything will work out. Again, I am no expert. If you do not think your baby is getting enough it is always good to check with your doctor. I wish you the best!!!

Hello S.,

I had the same problem when mine were close to that age I had to distance their feedings and they ate when they were a little hungrier. This way they didn't get to distracted with playing first. If they wanted to play after that was ok also. As long as they didn't bite. LOL It's great that you are breast feeding it makes for healthier and smarter kids.
Best of luck
