Hi Mamas,
My sister-in-law has a brand new baby and mentioned that she wanted to get a nursing cover for nursing in public. I'd like to get her one for her birthday next weekend. Any suggestions? I just used a blanket for my daughter....
Thanks!!!

I loved my HooterHider (yes, that is actually the name of it). They have great fabrics and a piece of plastic boning on the top that arches and allows you to see the baby while you are feeding. It is not cheap (approx. $35)but it is worth every penny. I could not live without it while I was breastfeeding. It is sold Baby Babinskis in Foothill Village.
I bought mine from a little boutique called Tiara on 11th east just north of 2100 S. right across the street from the post office. The covers were $35 and they have the cutest prints that I could find..... and I looked around a lot! They also have the cutest kid clothes its worth going there just to see what they have. The women who owns the stores makes some of the clothes in the shop!
My friend owns her own company called Joia and makes a Mommy Cover. You can find it here: http://www.joiaproducts.com/1.html. She uses super cute fabric, they're very well made. She also uses wire in the cover and a nice, sturdy reel.

These are WONDERFUL! This is my Cousin's store (and this is cheaper than the Hooter Hider or others- with Shipping I think they are under $30)My sister and cousins use them. My sister loves it because it is lightweight and has the opening at the top so you can see to get things adjusted.
Check out bittybasics.com. Very cute and affordable nursing covers!
I recommend the Hooter Hider. I love mine. It looks like a big apron, but without the tie around the wrist. They have them in different colorful prints.
Hi A.-
I bought a Hooter Hider and I loved it! About $40. You can find a gender neutral one that you always reuse for the next kid. It's thin enough that the baby doesn't get too hot under it, and has terry towel in one corner for any lil spills. Good luck and hope that you find one she loves!
Get her a "Hooter Hider", they are awesome! They also go by another name, but if you just search online for Hooter Hider, you will find it. They are about $30, so not very expensive. I had one with my second baby and loved it!
I absolutely love my Hooter Hiders cover. It has a flexible wire at the top that creates an opening so you can look down at your baby. It also has a piece of terry cloth attached to one corner for a burb cloth. It is so small, I can easily carry it in my purse. I think they are changing the name to Bebe au'lait, so you might want to search under that as well. I found mine online, and I am planning on getting one for my sister who is expecting.

Never tried them myself, but I know a few ladies who used Hooter Hiders. HTH!
Try a Hooter Hider by Bebe au Lait (http://shop.bebeaulait.com/).
Or, if you know how to sew and want to save some money, make her one (http://dovt.blogspot.com/2007/04/diaper-tote-and-hooter-h.... I've made a few of them for myself and friends and it's super easy!
There is one called the Hooter Hider, but my mom makes them too. Let me know if you would like one made.
Thanks, L.
Hi,
Google Hooter Hider if this site does not work:
http://www.embellishedmom.com/bebe-au-lait.html?gclid=COi...
I absolutely loved mine and have bought them for several friends, who also have wonderful things to say. I used it until my son was 11 months old and after that he only nursed at home, early morning and late night. They are very fashionable, but some have bold colors. I used the Yoko.
They wash very well and have a wipe for when mild drips from the babies mouth(burp cloth material) on the inside corner. I would not recommend using it as a burp cloth though. I do think I have seen them sold in Boulder on Pearl Street with matching burp cloths.
Good luck!
I looked all over for a cover I liked. I bought one from Baby Time: http://babytimenursingcover.com/
It has an adjustable neck strap, a flexible boning in the neck (so it stand up and you can see the baby, while you are nursing) and it has a velcro pull-strap that you can attach around you if you are outside and it's windy, so it stays in place. They have lots of great patterns to choose from. I love mine.
I am going to follow the crowd here and also suggest a Hooter Hider or similar product (Bebe Au Lait, etc.) with the wire in the cover. I am breastfeeding my 3rd child and I so wish I had this product with the first two!!! Completely worth the investment!
There is one I have heard of called hooter hiders. I think maybe you could google it and see if anyone local sells it. Also, check your Craigslist ads, I know in my area locals make and sell similar items.
The most popular one we have at Bosom Buddies is one from Bebe au Lait, which is a pretty patterned cover with a wide neck opening so mom can see the baby.
The second best seller is a poncho mom wears which could pass as her own clothing: soft sueded cloth with a little bigger opening for her head so she can see the baby.
We have a new idea from a very creative mom: a hat with a big soft floppy brim. Baby wears the hat which covers mom nicely.

Not 100% sure where you live, but I bought a cover from a mom here in Aurora, CO, this week that works great. It is lighter weight than a blanket (blankets always made me and my baby sweat). It has a firm collar and made from a stylish patterned fabric. Contact Jewel at ###-###-#### ... she advertises on craigslist too if you want to see some of the patterns ... just type in Hooter Hider (hers are 3" wider and longer than Hooter Hiders, which is great for my twins!).
I love my Bebe Au Lait nursing cover! I have used it everywhere. They have beautiful colors and patterns too. It wraps around your neck with an adjustable strap. Also the top of it has wiring so it bows out.. this way you don;t have to keep lifting the blanket to see your baby. Here is the website: http://www.bebeaulait.com/
They sell some at Bosom Buddies near Park Meadows Mall.
I have a first yeas one I really like.
My mom actually made me 4 of these. I saw a picture of one in a magazine and sent it to her. I keep one in the diaper bag, car, rocking chair and one random one. Essentially it's a fleece blanket with a tie. I LOVE THEM!
I recommend the "bosom blanket". Google it, and you'll find the web site. I met this mom from the Highlands Ranch area last spring who started the company and hand made the first bosom blankets her self. Now they are hand made by other moms, still right here in CO. She made tons of improvements over the other popular nursing covers. I think you can order online, and they may be sold in stores around here, too.
I was also going to mention www.cuteslings.com - there are some great patterns, and they fold up well - they're awesome!!!
My neighbor owns a business called Cute Slings (www.cuteslings.com). When my cousin was here this summer, we popped by and got her a nursing cover and she LOVES it! It has a strap around the neck to keep it up and cool fabrics to choose from!
My girlfriend has a cover called the hooter hider :-) I just saw a similar product at Nordstroms in the baby department.
These are the best I've found. Organic cotton, and they actually cover your back too, which made it so much more discreet when you are walking around with your shirt pulled up!

I had these two gals in one of my boutiques.
Both have great patterns, colors etc.
Both are very reasonably priced!

I have what I call a hooter hider! My sister-in-law made it for me. But if you are looking to buy one you can find them on Etsy.com . Just make sure there is boning in the top. It makes it nice so you can still see the baby and no one can see you feeding.
I just got one from itzyritzy.com. I love it!
I suggest going to www.etsy.com. It's a handmade only site and there are tons of SAHM who sell handmade items including a variety of nursing covers. I have a shop there and I love the products I've purchased and all the buyers who have bought from me. It's an amazing community. Many of them will even make a custom item for you. Good luck with your search.
I haven't read the post, but I am sure you have gotten a lot of great suggestions. When I was breastfeeding my oldest, just used a blanket, until I found a saw on sale. It was the kind that go over your head like a poncho. It as knitted so it had little holes. The holes were small enough that no one could see through the shawl, but baby could see through it. This was great for my youngest. She really had trouble with having her head covered. It is also light weight, so it is good year around. It allows for great air circulation. I had misplaced it during my pregnancy with her, so I was thrilled when I found it. I bought it on sale for 3 dollars more than 2 years ago and I plan to use it for number 3, due in January :o) It was also great to not have to worry about them pulling it off when the flailed around at times.
Hope this helps.

Check out thepeekboutique.com for covers and slings (which make GREAT nursing covers).
One of my friends made one for me. It is 3 feet by 2 feet and has an adjustable strap on one of the longer sides. I just used a blanket with my first one and hated having to hold it up with my chin all the time. With this "nursing shield" (that's what I call it) I don't have to worry about that. Also, my baby can't pull it down! If I made one though I would probably make it a little bigger, but this one is great.
I don't know if you sew, but you could make her one. I've taken two pieces of flannel, 2 yards each. Place the two fabrics facing each other and sew around them, leaving about 5 inches open so you can pull it through. Then sew a 1/2 to 1 inch seam around blanket. Buy some coordinating ribbon (3 in thick. sew the ribbon down the lenth side of the blanket leaving a loop in the middle to go over your head. If you need or want more directions, just e-mail me.
I highly recommend the Hooter Hider. It's also marketed under the name Bebe au Lait. I did a google search to find them and wound up ordering online, but I think they're also sold at Nordstrom. It was wonderful since it allows you to see the baby while nursing and allows some air flow for the baby, and it has enough fabric to fully cover so that you're not always pulling a blanket up or down.
Hi A.,
I have a Mommy Cover it's by Joia, and they have the cutest patterns and colors and there is a retractable reel that goes behind your back and Velcros in a pocket on the other side, so baby can't kick the cover off, plus there is a semi rigid neck line so you can see your baby while you nurse and it rolls up compactly to put in the diaper bag or purse. I find it is far better then any other cover on the market. You can find it at www.joiaproducts.com. There is a video clip that shows off the features. Check it out I am positive you will fall in love with it. When ever I am out I have Mommies ask me where I got it. Check out the web site and decide for your self. Good luck and happy nursing!
