Breastfeeding and Possible Strawberry Allergy

My 13 month had a possible reaction to strawberries yesterday.after eating one, she got a rash on her face and her became red and swollen and watery. The reaction went away on its own about an hour and a half later. Today, I wasn't thinking and ate 4-6 strawberries. I called our drs oncall service, and the nurse said not to breastfeed for 24 hours. Does anyone have experience with this? My daughter is still pretty attached to breastfeeding, but my milk is running low as it is. I'm afraid that waiting 24 hrs may be the end of breastfeeding for us, and I was hoping to do a gradual transition for my daughter. Also, pumping has been usuccessful for months, so I don't think that would help. Any suggestions?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone! I looked on kellymom and didn't find the information I wanted, but I didn't realize that you could post on there too- I'll have to keep that in mind for the next dilemma! For the mom who asked- I think that my supply is running low because my milk does not always let down or takes a very long time to let down when my daughter breastfeeds. She gets very frustrated. Also, I don't get any milk from pumping anymore. I haven't done anything to try to increase my milk supply because we're slowly decreasing the time she spends breastfeeding anyway, and I'm trying to just let nature take it's course. But, I didn't want to stop cold-turkey!

My husband and I decided that I would not breastfeed during the night after I ate the strawberries. (My daughter still breastfeeds at night 1-3 times.) My husband took the night shift armed with a bottle of whole milk, and she did very well, just waking up once for the bottle! I did breastfeed her a few times the next day. We decided that during the day, we could watch very closely for any reaction, and we had benadryl ready just in case. She had no reaction.

Thanks for all of the advice!

You won't lose your milk in 24 hours. Even if pumping is not productive for you, you can still do it to stimulate your nipples and keep milk production going. That's what I would do, for sure.

SHe could grow out of the strawberry allergy, too. It's best to withhold berries until they are like 18 months old, anyway.

Don't stress about it, if you stress, you will suppress your milk supply. Just pump every couple of hours today, or whenever you would have nursed.

Wanted to ask you, what makes you think your milk is running low? Just curious. You will make as much as you use, as long as you are nursing.

just nurse, and have benedryl ready just in case. But it's actually good for the baby to have it through your milk instead of straight. And they say even with meds and alcohol to only dump the next pumping not for a full 24 hours.

I would just NURSE!!! You only had a few and it is not her eating them directly. Also since the reaction didn't last very long when she ate one herself I wouldn't worry that much. Maybe give her a little bit of bendryl if it looks like she is having another reaction. But the LAST thing I would do is not nurse for 24 hours, that seems crazy to me and will be harder on your lo than a short reaction to strawberries.
Good luck!!
I also second the idea to go to kellymom. That is a WONDERFUL source for bfing moms! Not all the moms here bf but they still give advice about it even if they don't know what they are talking about :(

I think you are geting some bad advise. Please go to www.kellymom.com and post in their forum. They really know breastfeeding, and can give you acurate info. You really might not have to do this, post their and find out for sure.

Drink lots and lots of water, flush your system as quickly as you can. 24 hours seems excessive to me. but you can continue to stimulate you milk supply by having her cuddle with you while she drinks whatever you substitute .
Since today is a festive day, it could all blow over pretty quickly, but don't worry about losing your supply in 1 day. The human body will always provide what her child needs.

Hi E.,

My son is highly allergic to all nuts. I am vegetarian and nuts are a staple in my diet. When I breastfed him he did not experience any problems. We found out he was allergic the first time he tried to eat nuts after turning 2 yrs. old. By then I was no longer breastfeeding him. Sounds like your little one should not eat strawberries directly but I doubt that the few strawberries you ate will have an effect on her.

Blessings,
L.

I think the nurse is right. A second reaction can be worse than the first. So you want to try to avoid that. 24 hrs may be long but I wouldn't want to expose her, so I would go with it.
