I would call any pharmacy and ask the pharmacist.
Is it safe to breastfeed my 2 week old on augmentin 875 mg, i came down with a staff infection after having some skin graphed because its skin cancer and the stiches got infected so i need to take this but will i harm my baby if i dont pump and dump. I dont want to mess up the fact that i am breast milk only but if i have to use formula i dont know how that will effect his disgestive system to go from breast milk only to formula only and then back to breast milk after i am done taking the medication. i know its probably common sense but anyone out there that knows for sure it would be greatly appreciated.
I would call any pharmacy and ask the pharmacist.
If you can check with your doctor, that's the best thing. But I think that most antibiotics are very safe to take during breastfeeding.
http://www.infantrisk.com/ You can look up medications on Dr Hale's website.
I looked up Augmentin on my "LactMed" app on my iphone and it says that it is acceptable to use during breastfeeding and that it is not a reason to discontinue breastfeeding.
I would make sure you are taking a probiotic while taking it. I would suggest using a diaper cream on your baby pro-actively to help in case of diaper rash which can happen while you are on antibiotics. Your baby might be a little fussy so lots of cuddle time. Make sure you are drinking enough water.
I am assuming you told your doctor you were breastfeeding. Doctors will try to prescribe something that is compatible if they can. You can also ask the pharmacist.
I think you need to ask your doctor, but if you have to use formula he will be ok.
