Does anybody know of a way to produce more breastmilk. I have been pumping for the past two weeks since my son has been in day care and my supply has gotten really low. I pump four times at work, plus I go feed him on my lunch break. So besides more pumping what can I do?

What can I do next?

Go to the healthfood store and tell them what you are looking for. I went to GNC and they helped me, I forget the name of the product though. I also went to Sprouts in Flower Mound, they have a large selection of vitamins and supplements. When I told the lady what I wanted she was able to help me. There is also a herbal tea that you can drink, I think it's called mom's tea. Sorry that I can't remember any of the names of the products. Good luck!

Wow, you seem to be doing things right.

I tried eating the herb Dill. Try a few springs per meal. I've read that people make Dill seed tea as well. There are also other teas in natural food stores that gear towards Nursing Moms. Check the internet for those but I've never tried that.

A friend said Dark Beer/Ale helps but nurses I spoke to said that was an old wive's tale and that all that does is relax you which may make pumping easier.

I switched to a double mechanic pump which helped my supply. Make sure you are eating right and Drinking plenty of water, too.

Good luck!

Hang in there. Your body needs to get used to the pump as well. When I just returned to work, my milk supply also decreased quite a bit which depressed me a lot. Relax and keep the effort. Also, I think pumping four times at work maybe too much. Usually once every 3 hours is enough. But do pump 15-20 minutes each session no matter you got milk coming out or not. If possible, try putting hot wet towels on your breast and message for a bit if no milk comes out. That always brings a second letdown for me in a minute or two.

It sounds like you are not drinking enough fluids. There is usually some decrease when you go back to work and are only pumping. Drink more water, milk, etc...eat properly and make sure you let your son nurse at lunch and as often as needed at night. If this doesn't work...call Le Leche League for assistance. You can search for a facility in your area online.

There is an herb that you can buy at any good health food store called Fenugreek. I think it works better if you take it without any other additives. I also pumped right before I fed my son. I would pump one breast and then let him feed on it while I pumped the other breast. This helps increase your supply because your son can get more milk out of your breast than the pump can. He may need additional feeding at first, but soon your supply will increase. Good luck, I know how hard it is trying to breast feed and work full time myself, but I think your son's health is worth it don't you? :)

I delivered at Plano Presby 5 years ago. Next to the maternity they have a gift shop and a lactation center. There, they suggested I start taking some herbal capsules 3 times a day and they really worked for me( I breastfed until my son turned 2 years old ). I don`t recall their name, but I am sure if you go to any Presbyterian hospital in the metroplex you will be able to find them. Then, it cost me about $20.00 a month but once you start you have to keep taking them in order to work. I hope this help... and, Victoria, keep up the good job. I really support breastfeeding mothers!

If you are working 8 hour days then you are pumping too much. I work 8 hour days also and pump only twice a day....once at 10 and then again at 2. I get 4 to 6 ounces each time...usually 3oz per breast each session. Drink plenty of water too. See, you are not giving your breasts a chance to replenish therefore frustrating yourself when not enough is coming out. Be patient and only breastfeed twice while at work. I promise you will notice a difference.

Hi Victoria,
I had the same problem and I used FENUGREEK. You can get this at any health food store. I found out about this supplement from a lactation nurse. I took about 3-4 tablets twice a day. It did increase my milk supply in about a day's turn around. Also, pumping does not do the job as effective as a baby. Remember that their saliva stimulates production. I know it's difficult because you can't do this throughout the day, but increase nursing as much as possible. I also drank a tea that increased my supply - I don't recall the name, but the health food store will know.
Good luck!!
